I expect to start my driving career with Prime Tuesday, November 30, 2010. This thread appears to be starting off the way I was looking for. Positively! Since I've made my decision, I don't want to be second-guessing myself now. Thanks bodiej! :biggrin_25514:

I went through Prime's training starting in August. I was out with an instructor for just under 3 weeks. Came back in, tested, got my CDL. My CDL instructor wanted me to stay with him for the 50,000 miles of training. We did that in about 10 weeks with a week off and a day or two here or there. I would be hard pressed to find anything negative to say about Prime. It was everything they promised. Part of the reason a lot leave Prime, are the offers they get. The industry knows a Prime student is one of the best trained out there. I accepted another offer from a flatbed company that has a terminal 8 miles from my house. You leave on Mon mornings and come back Fri night. Weekends at home and the possibility of a lot of 10 hour restarts I can do at home. They would not have hired an inexperienced driver, except for the fact that I was trained at Prime. I regret not being able to stay with Prime, but one of the things you can't train for is the away from home time. At 53, I decided to leave the day job and try this. No fault on Prime, but myself and my wife do not want to try and adjust to the rigors of being gone a month at a time. If you want the job, and have the opportunity to go to Prime, I recommend it over all.

    Congrats!

Not to be a downer... I'm sure a lot of people would like to know...

I'm curious on how the whole payback deal goes. It looks like you left before 6 months, which would put you on the hook for the entire amount.

Was anything said to you about this before you left? Or did you ask?

Let us know how it all works out.

I'm sure that there is some hitch to the free training
    6-12 mth

A truck driving school don't give it away for free prime shouldn't either so if they require a small hitch then its understandable

    I researched Prime's school deal.
    I was told that:
You come up with initial Admin. fees.. ( like $100 BUCKS)
Then go thru school, training, etc...
The school cost was like $3500..
If you stayed at Prime for 1 year, the school was paid them, not billed to you.
If you stayed 6 months, you were billed for 1/2 the school cost.
I cant say for sure this is all in concrete, but this is what I was told when I spoke to a recruter and research of their website.

Oh, I know the deal. Quit under 6 months and they hit ya with the entire amount (in the $3.7k range). Quit under a year and it's half. After a year free and clear.

However I have yet to hear any details from those guys who quit under a year... Do they hit em with a lump sum? Payment plan? Intrest? Collection agency?

Those kinds of things im interested in. I'm 18 months past the 12 month mark, but I so train (not an instructor) and the question has come up.

Btw, the student is hired until they pass the test... So the year starts the day you pass the test.

Student is a potential employee. Passing the test automatically graduates the student to Trainee.

    Trainee is an employee.

    To jmwaller,,,,,,,,
I hear ya loud n strong man,,,,
I'm 56 and getting back into this field...
Just cant seem to talk myself into any OTR type driving.....Just dont want to devote my whole life to pavement!
Just want to pay the bills, have food on the table,, of corse be close to family, and live life at least a little.
So I'm hoping to get something in the "local" side of things...
In most all of my research, it seems that, even if your gone a month, by yourself, drivin, drivin, drivin, mile after mile: by time you take your expenses off the top for bein on the road, and this, and that, your comin home with what I feel is squat for what your sacraficing!!
I hope all works out for you and your family, and I have so much respect for all the people and families in this trcuking industry, because you have to really give up so so much, for "not an even return on your efforts".

Other than food and showers what expenses come as the sole responsibility of the driver?
