with the SlowDown 2008 less companies have been hiring and freight is down, but since going 60/63 (for solos) some drivers have left Schneider. They like to hire where the freight originates from = this is what gets you on the road.

The Schneider IQ equation:

I have seen many fine examples from our esteemed universities who could not drive a semi 2 miles without wrecking. It's not their fault -they simply lack a driver's IQ and Schneider won't ever hire them. Having said that, i know quite a few great drivers that couldn't win a 2nd grade spelling bee.

When I took the Schneider physical, my brain scan and later statistical analysis confirmed with 99% probability that I indeed had the physical necessities to make it as a Schneider driver. -from that point on it would be up to me. Well, at least that's what the recruiter told me over the phone. I also heard that Schneider has enlisted the Physic Friends Network to help in recruiting.

Schneider Slowing down

Sorry to say that yes, Schneider is slowing down a bit on training new drivers. They are, like every other company out there, slowing down their trucks to 59-60 mph for the solo drivers as well. (Team trucks are staying around 65). They are desperately needing TEAM drivers, and hiring more experienced drivers. I would like to think it saves them money on the insurance.

Arizona is basically for team drivers only. Not many solo driver loads in and out of there, except for out of California. You might want to ask them if them have any dedicated runs out of OTAY, CA that go to Arizona for team relays, maybe. I do know that they have dedicated accounts that specifically call for experienced drivers out of CA, so you might be out of luck.

If you can get to team with someone Schneider has some awesome accounts that go into Phoenix.

Right now, most solo runs are running the east coast. You might want to look at CR England for Arizona.

Correction to comment #160

I have something on Schneider. Last week I called and spoke to a recruiter at Schneider. I was told they aren't hiring from AZ. I dicovered, they don't go through AZ enough and they don't have an OC around here. The nearest OC is Fontana, CA.

They would take me on as a student if I were living in the Fontana area. The recruiter followed up by saying on the only students they are taking on is for team drivers. They are also excepting experianced drivers. To me this means Schneider is slowing down.

Schneider slowing down

Yes, but keep in mind that every company out there is slowing down. With the big holidays coming up soon, Freight should pick up.

You are just in a bad area, everyone out here knows that it is very easy to get freight from East to West, but freight from West to East is challenging. Living in the West side, you should be looking for a company that you can run up and down the west coast.

There is alot of Truck Training, you just need to go out on the internet and get the training first. Call other companies and find out who they hire from. Right now, LTL companies are making out big,....

Good luck....

It could also mean they are trying to "raise the bar".........

I don't think there is anything wrong with not wanting to be what everyone calls .......... the bottom feeders..........

After contacting each other, they will want you to go through their on-boarding interview. At that time, they will ask that you take your DOT physical, urin exam, fax/mail them info that you need to be a trucker, i.e. birth certificat/passport for Canada entry, DL, SSN card etc... You will also have to take the tests at your home state to get your permit. At that point, you will be assigned to go to school. Keep in mind, they pay for most everything. Also, if you go to school within a certain time after filling out the application (I believe it is 20 or 30 days) you will recieve a $200 bonus.

If you visit their web-sight, you can look up to see what positions they have available for you in your area. I chose to drive tankers and make 2 cents extra. I live in Pensacola, FL and I will be pretty much on a dedicated account out of Panama City, FL. That means my home time will be more great than others. My home Op. Center is New Orleans.

Depending on where you live will determine which school they send you to. That is pretty easy to determine, just let me know where you live or ask them when you call. If you go to Charlotte training center, there are other benifits I will share with you if you decide to go. Just let me know.

The class is 3 weeks long. You will go an intensive 11 days of initial training that gets you driving, turning, backing, pre-trip inspection, coupling/un-coupling, map reading, trip-planning, etc.... I attendended most of Steven's school and had heard their training is good. However, Schneider's training was much, much better!! They pay for everything to include your meals. You will then have three days off. You will need money only for meals during these days off. If you live close by, GO HOME! You need the break. If not, lounge by the pool and drink a beer in celebration. Then you attend a week called "jump-start". You will get issued $200 on that Monday to eat on for the next two weeks. During jump-start week is where you check out on all your skills. You will get processed into the system, get driver number, learn the computer system etc... This week goes pretty quickly and it is fun knowing that you are near the end. We graduated at 2pm on Friday and had the choice of going home for a few days or just rolling out with an instructor. I had to come home for a huricane. I was given a choice of staying at home for a week or so to recover from the storm (with pay). Either way, you will recive $300 that next Friday and every Friday till your over-the-road training is done. This takes 2 weeks with a training engineer. Then, you go to an Operating Center for three days or so to perpare for your driving skills test portion of your CDL. Then back to your home state where they provide a truck to take your skills test. You will then have a CDL and get your own truck. At that time, you will be driving for miles.

As far as the school. They feel they don't do their jobs unless you are successfull. You truely feel as though you are their customer while you are in training. With Steven's and I heard with others, they will boot you if you have trouble right off the bat. Not with Schneider. I saw no one leave. Some had to stay and work on their skills a day or two during the three day break, but all where worked with till they got it down. The average ratio was two students to one trainer.

This company evens buys you boots to wear.

I had a very rough experiences with other companies till I ran into Schneider. Just look at their numbers. The turn-over rate is close to being the lowest in the industry. Great maintnance and accident rates. (means money in your pocket) Besides, they pay you if you are down for a certain amount of time. To include putting you up on a hotel.

They hire a lot of ex-military, which translate to proffessionalism. Steven's trainers where a bunch of un-educated, angry, unsatisfied folk. However, I found Schneider mostly educated, many ex-military with great patients and teaching skills.

I don't want to sound like a promoter for Schneider. However, you have very few opportunities to find companies that train you and don't make you feel like they are doing you a favor. They also lie their behinds off. I found Schneider to be up-front and not wanting to be just another mill. They want longevity (unlike swift, stevens, cr england, prime etc..).

Please feel free to contact me by PM me back with other questions. I will be in town till Thurs morning, then off on the road for two weeks.

Oh, also, the average time on the road is 2 weeks with 2 days at home. They take great pride in their home time. They also have a program where you can drive for 2 weeks and be home 1 week.
BB King,

Are you still with Schneider? And do you still live in NOLA? I am thinking of getting back in trucking - been in and out of it since 1974..=*^)

Started as an O/O, then had a small trucking company of my own but de-regulation made me see the light pretty quick so shut it down.

Been a driver trainer for a couple nationwide co's - Swift and USXpress and hauled just about everything out there on wheels, tankers, extended flats, doubles, reefers, electronics..

Been self employed for the last couple of years but the economy makes it hard to collect from clients..=*^(

And, the old "wanderlust" is raising it's head again..

Any info on today's trucking world would be great..

Thanks,

Chris

"the bottom feeders"

HUH?

Would be nice if you elaborated on this,.... I can't make any more per mile with any other company, knowing that I will be getting paid every week,... excellent contract, lots of drop and hook, where I am not spending my time unloading and loading,... ummm,... would like to understand why this was said,...

The slowing economy seems to have everything slowing down. Please help me out, when u say holidays r coming up, what hoildays r u talk'n about that r coming up "soon".

As for driving the west coast thanks, I will try and find an outfit that does this. So far I have been just looking at nationwide companies because it seems most of the companies that train run OTR east & west. It was my thinking, based on reading this forum, that new drivers need to start out with a nation wide company, spend a year or 2 with them then move on.

What r LTL companies?

Thanks alot.
