Hey guys im new to trucking and need some advice. Once im done with training i have an opportunity to either run day cabs and deliver to stores in california all day or run OTR. I'm leaning towards OTR for the experience part of it. any advice would really help. Thanks:biggrin_2552:

Otr experience will always let you move to a local job. You generally can't move from a local gig to OTR.

got kids and a wife? Take the local job.

Got an ex-wife you can't stand that still lives in the same town as you? Take the OTR job.

OTR.... better/more experience and it gets you out of that communist state to enjoy life :yes2557::biggrin_25517::biggrin_25512: If you decide to change companies, most will just look at your otr experience.

    Lets see OTR vs Local

Sleeping in a truck at a nasty truckstop vs Sleeping at home= Local

Having no life vs Having a semi normal life=Local

Shorted and/or crappy mileage pay vs flat rate or hourly pay=Local

Not knowing your "customers" vs Knowing your "customers"=Local

Leaving California vs Staying in California=Otr

I could keep going but other then getting to leave Cali I can think of no reason to run OTR if you can run Local.

Exactly what he said. If you want ANY semblance of a home life, you're going to want to stay local. And don't believe that nonsense about not being able to go from local to OTR should you decide you want to. If they give you a hard time, just ask to take a road test. You'll be bumping a helluva lot more docks in some unbelievably tight spots staying local, trust me. The rest (logs, time mangement, etc is basically common sense when you get right down to it) Whatever your choice, good luck, take your time, and stay safe!

I drove locally in Southwest CO for about 12 years. When I relocated to AZ I couldn't get a local job, my only option was to go OTR & while it took some time to find an OTR company that would take my local experience I found one.

If you want to go local, go local. If you want to drive OTR, drive OTR. Don't worry about what you MIGHT want to do down the road, because even if you suck it up and go OTR now to "gain OTR experience", that experience won't matter to some companies after you've been local for a couple years anyway because they want RECENT OTR experience. Other companies only care about T/T experience. If you call a company that wants recent OTR experience and won't recognize your T/T experience driving locally, hang up the phone and call another company. The companies that want recent OTR experience aren't necessarily any better or worse than those who just want T/T experience.

Personally, I like sleeping in my own bed at night. Even when I was OTR, if I could plan my run so that I could take my break at the house, I would.
