Roehl DOT Physical and their BMI requirement.

    Hello all.

I posted the following thread in another site , but I am hoping
to reach more Roehl applicants and interested persons who haven't taken
    the Roehl DOT physical.

Please excuse duplications as I am still very new here and I'm still figuring everything out.

    Here is the post.

    Hello all.

Well , I took the DOT physical last Friday and passed , got my medical examiners card etc.

I just wanted to mention a few things that occur during my physical at least , so I can't

    attest to anywhere else.

I did the usual things , paperwork , etc.

So , the UA test was checking for kidney function and sugar content only , at THIS time, until first day of class if I understand correctly.

Then came the weight check , THEN my neck circumference was measured.
I asked about that , but the nurse didn't know why.

The doctor came in and first thing he said was to watch my " neck circumference "

because Roehl DOES have a BMI limit.

I was 1.5 inches away from being sent to have a Sleep Apnea

    test done. WHEW ! lol

I asked about when BMI requirements came into effect since I had

read , I believe it was in the FMCSA ( not sure tho ), that not until

Next year does it become mandatory for All companies to do that check.

The doctor stated , " it's up to the individual company to decide whether they want to check now or next year , and

Roehl has it done now ".

Anyway , the rest of the testing was the usual vision test ,

forced whisper test , heart , lung , ears , nose and throat test ,

and squatting and walking like a duck for a few steps.

There was also a test where I stretched my arms out , palms up , head back test checking

    balance.

So , that was it , really.

    Take care and be safe.

    DD

FYI this is bad info....there is no FMCSA Requirement for companies to do this...nor is there any proposed rulemakeing about it either.....

The companies are starting to Self Regulate this....(some for profit cause you have to use their doctors and their "approved" machines)......

This is about limiting Insurance Liability Nothing more....

Im a year from another dot physical but I'm seriously not liking it. If they say my neck is too large and I need to go get a sleep apnea test done I'll most likely go work for another carrier. Ive lost some weight since I started flatbed and I can tell you one thing, I sleep just fine. I don't wake up tired. I don't get sleepy while I'm driving. I don't need a test to tell me I'm not sleeping right. I draw the line when I'm told I need to get a machine to fix a problem I know I don't have. Just cuz I'm a fat donkey don't mean im unsafe all of a sudden after driving for a year. Its plain and simple BS.

    From the Feds Themselves

Based on new standards recommended from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, motor carrier and commercial motor vehicle drivers with a Body Mass index (BMI) of thirty-five or higher should take a sleep apnea test

    September 24, 2012
Since the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration introduced its newest sleep apnea guidelines it has now become more important than ever for drivers to have a testing option. Truck drivers are being looked at more and more as a safety hazard on the roads to themselves and other drivers on the road. According to the US motor carrier authority, with-in the trucking industry and all CDL holders about 28 percent of them have sleep apnea. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to many other serious health issues. The FMCSA has been looking into specific regulations regarding sleep apnea in truck drivers and what the guidelines should be following when screening a driver. The newest FMCSA recommendations include drivers who have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or greater be granted conditional certification pending sleep study evaluation.

Its a Recommendation....Not a Rule...in other words...they would like it if you would test for it...but there is no Law..or regulation requiring it...

and on top of it I couldn't afford a sleep test if I wanted too...and only a few carriers would foot the bill.....its all about money anyway...follow the money I always say...its another way for people to get rich off of mandating something that really is not needed industry wide....

This ######## reglatory environment is killing trucking....and chasing out good drivers...to be replaced with CHEAP labor..

and FYI there is nothing about a rule about sleep apnea on FMCSA's website...just recommendations from the National Sleep foundation...(hmmmm wonder how much money they are getting)..

I did say that I Wasn't sure if that is where I read it.

I was just passing along how MY DOT physical was.

I quoted what MY doctor said to me when I asked about why my neck was measured.

He told me what MY ( a lady ),neck circumference needs to be per ROEHL's requirement.
It WAS never my intent to mislead anyone.
