I just got a job at the US Postal Service as a MVO/TTO (slang for truck driver) I can say that it is so far proving to be a great place to be. especially since I would definitely be considered a newbie to trucking...Have driven buses for 30 years, but that's another story...lol

All the trucks are a real pleasure to drive, all of the straight trucks have backup cameras on them, and every truck, even the tractor trailers, are all Allison automatics... we have 28, 38, and 48' trailers. All the freight (mail) is on wheels. All we do is push it in the truck, and when we get it to our mail center, we wheel it to the end of the truck where the mail handlers take it. We unloaded my 38' last night in about 4 minutes...So easy... And at most, we put about 100 miles a night on the trucks, most are far less than that.

But, the downside, they tend to follow drivers to check you...Don't even think of pulling into a McDonalds to eat with mail on board, and don't forget to lock the truck. Pretty much, if you can follow a few simple rules, it is not one bit bad. Starting pay is 16.81 a hr...but if you work past 6 pm add another 1.42 to that...Sunday is 25% more tacked on that...After you become "Career" the top pay is 27 a hr...Not too bad.

As we know, the Post office is not in the greatest shape...Probably, well, definitely, because we have to fund retirement benefits 75 years ahead of time... Only organization in the country required to do this... We are funding retirement for employees who aren't even born yet...lol

Lots of people still use good old fashioned mail...Our priority mail is growing by leaps and bounds, and we have a few things in the works coming up that will definitely make good things happen...

Check the usps website for hiring. Just did a good bit of retirements....

Huh...they were starting PSE drivers at $21/hr in Seattle last year when I applied. They didn't end up calling me back until spring 2014 though, and I'd already left the area by then.

Seriously though, sounds like a good gig, easy on the old back and joints. Congrats.
