I can't speak for all barns. I run a dedicated route out of Minooka, IL. , and very happy with how its run. The few interactions I've had with GA, NJ, and Columbus OH, have been professional/pleasant.

We are a union shop through I.L.A. 1964 (International Longshormen Assoc.)

How does the insurance work through the union? Deductibles? And are the pretty good at letting you do longer or shorter runs?

Worked for them years ago on a dedicated account out of Nichols NY. At the time, not union..since they've gotten that contract back from Ryder, I don't know. I had a good run with them...the only annoying thing really was dealing with their yard in Secaucus NJ (difficult parking, no room, yard staff doesn't speak English well and can be exceedingly rude).

IDK how much of this info will only relate to my home terminal, or throughout the company?

I pay $10/week for my union dues, this includes insurance fund through Magnacare. I've had co-pays and some questionable uncovered services, but no outragous bills.<---Do your best to get pre-qualified, and covered 100% on some, and small co-pay on prescriptions.

I can't answer how easy it is to get longer shorter runs, Only that we borrow drivers from other locations. Some are only passing through, others will stay with Minooka terminal for days, or weeks.

    Good luck Nedrudt

That maybe true for the terminal you are speaking with. They do make an effort to keep newer tractors. Oldest I've seen throughout the company is maybe 5yrs. Some terminals have brand new fleets, mostly with APU. IDK about auto? My terminal leases from Penske 2012/13 Volvo manuals.

I started out of columbus in December. So far I'm pretty happy with my choice. Got a 2012 volvo 670 (currently broke down in WV) that lets me idle at night and isn't restricted, btw I did get a rental truck the day it broke down so still on the road. It's all drop and hook and live load/unload, 100% no touch which I don't think I'd mind unloading if they'd pay extra to do. I mostly go back and forth from columbus to the NJ yard but also sometimes out to stores or other DCs to pick/del. The NJ yard is right next to NYC and there's a train station really close to the terminal. Hopefully soon I can do a reset there and have a mini vacation.
Overall I like it here. A little disfunctional sometimes but if I have a problem I can get a hold of someone pretty easily. Trucks are nice, really light loads between 6k-20k, usually home twice during the week and over the weekend so really good home time. So ya I'm satisfied.
