After being screwed over by US Express and being out of a job for a little while. Me and my wife was looking at Craigslist and I found a job here in Las Vegas doing hot shot work. I will be driving a dodge 4500 with a 53' goose neck car wedge. I am going OTR doing 48 states picking up and dropping off vehicles. No satellite in the truck, the truck is an automatic with satellite radio. Get to use Drivers Daily Log if I want or lose leaf logs. The boss is down to earth. If I have a empty trl I can unhook from it and go wherever I want to go. I do get paid on percentage he says it averages about 1000 to 1500 a week or more. My first load is going to be little something like 550. To me though being unemployed and my wife doing all the work that will fine with me. I finally found a good job. Brush up on your length laws, and keep the CDL up to date. Some states like FL, and WY will look at you no different than a semi truck and WY will double check you just to make sure you are legal.

If you come thru WY with 4 cars MAKE SURE you are under 60' from the bumper of the first car to the bumper of the last one. If not YOU WILL be unloading a car. Trust me on this. I learned the hard way. Also do not jump the scales in WY, they will run you down and find out why at the side of the road. I also learned this.

WY plays by the book and will write you a ticket if you aren't.

Brickman: Thanks for the info I will brush up. My boss is suppose to call me sometimes today and we are going to pick upthe vehicles and see if I can drive this truck. But also he is going to show me how to load and do the paperwork. So if anybody else has any help please respond. The only bad thing about this job is he doesn't pay for hotel. So I have to pay for a hotel or sleep in the truck. So are their other regulations that I should now.

Unfortunately unless the truck has one of these, sleeping in the truck will not fall under a DOT approved rest break. You'll need your motel receipts to prove that you really did take a rest break and that is going to get real expensive real fast

ET1231. Do you have your CDL? I've read on some hot shot forums that you do not need it? Good to have though which is what I'll be doing. We looked at hot shot for a while, but you do need a sleeper, or hotel receipts. You can't just sleep in truck. There is a company in Canada that expands the rear side windows and puts a bed in back instead of back seat for around $1500, then you're legal and can sleep in the cab.
Good luck to you, money is good if you keep loaded. There are TONS of cars on U-Ship going coast to coast. Hope he is a good planner!

Gazza oh but you do need a CDL in many states. Crossing state lines in a commercial application over 10,000 lbs requires a CDL. Empty that rig is over 10,000 lbs.

Now a lot of states are not enforcing the laws on hot shotters but more of them are learning that hot shots are a source of untapped revenue and are beginning to bust them too.

I have class A. Well I guess I will be getting a motel but at least its tax deductible.

They are called Crew Cab Sleepers.

There are many sites that can be helpful.

Look up hotshothauling and rvtransporters. They can be alot of help.

Just google Hot Shot trucking forum. MTS trucking has a lot of info. The company that installs is based out of Saskatchewen (spelling?). Lot's of info on that forum about laws for hot shot.
I did think that if the state you were domiciled out of did not require a CDL for hot shot for a certain length and gross weight that you COULD enter other states that required it? I could be wrong though. We've decided personally to get our CDL's on our own back, heard WAY too many horror stories on here about sponsored training. We are still looking into hot shot together H\W or pick a OTR company that takes trainees.
