I remember Direct Transit from back in the 80's. Those were fast trucks, not Monfort fast, but fast enough to qualify for outlaw status. Somebody bought them out and castrated their trucks but I don't remember who.

Exactly ! they didn't have much say in the matter, they were CONSUMED by forward progress.
There are still several old hands still around the Dallas/Irving Tx yard. Ain't heard they died so they must still be there ....:biggrin_25525:

Back in the day I could throw that pigskin a 1/4 MILE. If only the coach would have put me in, we would have won STATE. If a company will run a load for less than 1.25 plus fsc they need to go under. By the way deregulation is doing exactly what they wanted. It got rates down and what we have now is BROKERS. Brokers are the bottom feeders of america but at the same time o/o dont have to pickup the loads but hey 80cpm without fsc is better than deadheading or at least thats what o/o have been told. Say No To Cheap Freight.

I went through the school in '97. They were a great outfit. I enjoyed being a "Movie Star." Life on the road was hard on my family at the time. I only pulled for them about a year. A1 in my book.

The reason Mike Starnes sold out was his wife caught him with his pants down one to many times(allegedly) He had been warned before, that was when he got the idea to sell stock to his drivers to try to get back control of the company(his wife was the money in the family) it did not work, somehow Mike's wife was related to the owner of Swift(sister in law?) so he sold out to him, last I heard Mike had started a small trucking company out of his hometown, Jackson MS and has some of his original drivers hired on, I do not know the name of it. I loved working for him, I was leased on for years with him(trk#503293) and made very good money with him. Swift invited me to lease on with them and I knew better, and when I heard how they rolled over the M.S. stock into Swift stock then they filed for bankrupcy causing all of the old M.S. drivers who went to Swift to lose their savings and retirements, I vowed to myself that I would never work for Swift even if they were the only company on the road. The Mississippi mud slinger was a great guy to work for, he treated his company drivers great even after M.S. got really big. I do not know who was the best Mike Starnes or Harold Anderson (ATS) but them not being in the industry is in my opinion one of the reasons why it is in the shape it is in
