I started with Hill Bros almost 18 months ago. My first three months spent as a company driver, the remainder in their lease-purchase program. I wouldn't have stayed if it wasn't working for me, but you and I may have different criteria to judge this by.

Overall, they have kept me moving throughout my time with them, even during last winter when so many other companies were downsizing or cutting back on miles. Company driver pay isn't that great, in my view, and they used to require a per diem system that many other trucking companies do as well. Getting home on time hasn't been as much of an issue for me as it was at my last employer (CFI, now Conway Truckload).

I've had a couple accounting issues but they were cleared up promptly. The company trucks are mostly Volvo 780s and a few dozen T-600s; the 780s are very nicely equipped with APUs, refrigerators and inverters.

I browse through these forums once a week or so. If you have any specific questions, ask away. You might also search google for blogs covering Hill Bros, or talk with Jason in recruiting and he can point you in the right direction.

    Good luck,

    Jim

Hey if you find out how to get more runs out to California let me know! My mom lives in southern California and occasionally I get home time there to see her but other than that the most common western location we go to is Phoenix for PetSmart loads.

The vast majority of our loads are midwest, with a sprinkling of Georgia/Mississippi, an occasional run up to Pennsylvania, and a little up north in North and South Dakota. No northeast or northwest, which is a big plus in the wintertime in my book.

If you live anywhere near Russellville, Fayetteville or West Memphis you should have zero trouble getting home in my experience.

Good luck in the orientation. You should enjoy the hotel -- make sure you try the Firewater Grille there at least once (the coconut chicken salad is awesome!).

Well, I'm a lazy trucker (my excuse as a lease-purchase operator is that I value efficiency highly. Thin, I know) so over my first 12 months leasing I averaged 2,564 paid miles per week. This is about what I averaged driving company for CFI before I came over so that is my comfort zone.

The past seven weeks I've only driven 16,030 miles, an average of 2,290 per week. Partly to blame was a breakdown in Texas a month ago that had me in the shop for a few days then ended on a weekend when freight was hard to come by.

You can certainly run harder. Abbie who operates the LP program at Hill ran some figures and found only one driver that made more net pay in the first four months of this year and he averaged about 3,200 miles a week. More power to him, I say.

Reefer vs dry loads... probably 60/40 towards reefer at the moment. It varies a bit, since if you do a PetSmart tour you'll haul a dry load from Nebraska or nearby to Phoenix, then a dry load from there to Denver, then something dry from there back towards the east probably. The last 3 loads I've been on have been dry, reefer, reefer and my next one is a reefer as well.

As for any other good and bad... the forced lobotomy was a bit of a ##### but you get used to it.

    Good luck,

    Jim
