It is LTL work, Less than Truck Load. Usually the trucks are real plain, some don't even have Air Conditioning, but that is no big deal because you go home every night. In Savannah the average starting pay is about $17.50 an hour then tops out at about $21 an hour after 2-4 years. The benifets are usually real good to, when I was with Con-Way we paid like 1% of our wage for medical. For example if I maid $1,000 then I paid $10 for the week for Coverage.
You usually start out as city driver doing local pick up and deliveries, and if you are fortunate you get extra hours working the dock. After you are there for awhile you can bid on line haul. At Con-Way that was where the Big Money was. Our line haul guys were getting almost .50 a mile running 500 miles a night. then working the dock for 3-4 hours a night.
Hope this helpsMoneyCat, TURKER and The Challenger Thank this. -
Why did you leave con way and what do you preferred ltl or gas hauler
-
Con-Way is a seniority based Company, I was the second most junior driver when the economy started tacking a crap and I was only working 2 or 3 days a week the month I left.
I like LTL better but am going to stick with gas hauling until we are way out of the recession. People still are using gas.Crobinson1324 Thanks this. -
I work for Saia and have been with them for 6+ years now and it truly is by far the best driving job I've had. Of course there are bad points to every job. The equipment isn't all that great but the money and home time is excellent. If you get a shot at getting on I'd say go for it. Hope this helps.

Oh and Turker, I'm out of the Greensboro terminal...close..

I was there when Brian was the terminal manager, I must have quit right before you got there. I am retired military so I wouldn't want to run line haul either. I ran the Hinesville route. I am pretty happy hauling gas for Eagle, I hope it is working out for you at Keen.

I always thought that line haul was the end goal for most LTL drivers,.....I know it is for me anyway,......

Line Haul is where the big money is in at for LTL drivers, but those guys work 14 hours a night for 5 days straight I imagine it gets to be abit much
