From what I've read about all types of weight loss surgery, you STILL have to make a life style change to get any benefit of it. If you don't, then the weight is going to go right back on.

Sure you will get some short term benefits, but over the long haul, if you aren't willing (or able) to change your life style, you are still gonna get fat again. And don't think I'm throwing stones here. I'm waaay to fat myself. But I know what to do to take it off. And it doesn't involve surgery.

What it does involve is something that I just haven't found the will power to do recently. . .:biggrin_2557:

to have the surgery you have to go thru a battery of psychological pre test and also lose some weight prior to show your commitment to having this. Generally the stuff before the surgery can take 6mo to a year. My brother in law had it last year-he was 425lbs. He lost like 35lbs from Jan to June had surgery in June and was down to like 265-275lbs by early Decemeber so he could have his hip replaced. He has maintained that weight or lost more since then so he's doing good. The bypass will literally cut you stomach to like 1 oz and by pass to large intestines. You will NOT be able to eat as much-- I think you can average like 500 or so calories a day so the weight generally falls off (one lb=3500 calories so if you are eating 500 a day do the math -and you have to figure about 10-12calories x your wt to get how many calories you eat a day to maintain your weight)
Can you 'get around' this after of course you can but generally you are so restricted on what you eat for the first year cuz you just can't hold the food (one oz is not alot) that over time you do learn to eat better. My brother in law also had nutritional training.
If you have tried what you can and have talked to your doctor and they okay it-It certainly is a viable option.
    Good luck Mrgreen

I understand Why they want you to lose weight before the surgery, but what is the point of the psychological testing? What kinds of questions are they asking? Just curious because i have considered this as an option.
my sister in law had the operation several years ago while she was living with us. I watched her go through hell! She tried her best To follow the doctor's orders But was not 100 percent compliance. It was not pleasant For anyone in my house If she ate too much. Let's just say that smell was awful! Her body really struggled to get enough nutrition out of the small amount of food that she was able to eat. IIRC, She could not even eat A small jar of baby food. What was remarkable to me Really tiny amounts of food were more than enough to satisfy her hunger! That is why i hate diets! I hate to feel hungry!
But if my sister in law's experience is normal, i have to think fat diet and exercise would be easier!

Just my 2 cents: if you have the self control to eat properly after gastric bypass, then you have the self control to eat properly without it.

Weight issues are generally caused by psychological issues, and surgery doesn't fix the mind. I see gastric bypass as a bandaid measure. It treats the symptons, not the cause.

You should try to lose the weight so you can live longer though. I honestly think you should try to start your own business, nothing like being your own boss...if you can handle it. Most people dont have the right mindset though. But if you try and dont succeed, they aren't going to take the disability away for not making money.. :D

I love when i hear about these weight loss gimmicks. Just have surgery *and change your diet* and you'll lose weight! Just take this pill *and change your diet* and you'll lose weight!

Last i checked you can change your diet for free...

    Exactly.

So are you saying that if a person doesn't have the willpower to exercise self control they should not do anything about losing weight? Or that they are an inferior person what does not deserve a better quality of life?
I have to assume you are not overweight, or you have not struggled with weight issues and the self confidence problems brought about by being heavy all your life. At least these people considering weight loss surgery are willing to acknowledge that something must be done and are willing to do something about it. you may not agree with what they want to do, but it is a step in the right direction.
