I am trying to get my CDL and I am blind in one eye. Does anyone know of anyway to get my CDL or help me with some sort of loop hole? I have been blind in one eye since birth and it has never affected me in any way. Thanks to anyone who can help. Thanks Bill

Sorry, but I think you are out of luck on this one. Any vision problems must be corrected to get a CDL, and you can't correct blindness, even if it's only one eye.

LMAO......I wouldn't want to be driving next to a guy that is blind in one eye; that is essentially is a 50% reduction of vision, and thats a liberal guesstimate. CMV's have enough blind spots as it is.

    What's next partially blind pilots?

The truth is that most people have one eye that is hugely dominant. Particularly with regard to binocular vision which is what is used predominantly in driving.A one eyed person will have hardly any difficulty in performing every day driving tasks as there vision is not poor because they only have one eye .
The problem is that peripheral vision and some depth perception ability is compromised. A driver with poor judgment or high risk acceptance personality is a muck bigger problem.

Seems like you are out of luck due to the 20/40 correctable rule.

Although, it gives new meaning to 'backing on the blind side'. :biggrin_25520:

I'm sorry, hand, but I'm afraid that blindness will prevent you from obtaining a CDL-A, unless doctors break out some radical new procedure in the immediate future. It's a darned shame, because I sense that you would more than make up for this disability... in the past, I've worked with people with disabilities, and these folks always strove harder to make things right. Not sure about the regulations pertaining to private Class A licenses... you may still be able to obtain one of those. The DMV or some other driver here should be able to answer that question. I once met some guy who shuttled RVs around the Western U.S., and he had one of those private Class A licenses, not a commercial license... that was over a decade ago, so I don't know if things have changed in that regard, especially with all the post-9/11 legislation.:biggrin_25520:

Sorry Bill! There is no way you can meet the 70 degree periphial vision test. Say you had 20/20 in one eye and 20/70 in the other, you might be able to fight for a medical waiver then. But that's about the bare minimum.

I knew of a guy that was blind in one eye. He was a bull huller. His handle was bull slinger. This was a long time ago before the CDL came out. He was an O/O. I do not know how he got by as well as he did.
