Here's a prime example why bmi and neck size should not be a factor. My last student almost had to take the test because they said his bmi and neck size was too high. Rode with me for 4 weeks no signs of sleep apenia. Current student, slim and fit, passed their stupid physical easily. Doesn't sleep worth a flip, I often want to pound on his chest to get him breathing again. Admitted to me he has sleep apneia and has a cpap machine but won't used it. So someone tell me whos butt they pulled the criteria out of?

Agree with these comments, you don't have to qualify as obese to have sleep apnea. The BMI does not take in to consideration muscle mass, men, women and children all use the same chart...not smart. So why do some people have sleep apnea and others don't? There are many factors that are involved, interdude listed most of them. You also need to realize that up to 20% of sleep apnea cases are not obstructive, they may have a component of central sleep apnea which means that the brain just doesn't register the breathing patterns correctly. There is not rhyme or reason for the disorder. For some people cpap, pap, bipap or other machines help, some people need a mouth guard which holds the jaw forward keeping the airway open on it's own - this is more comfortable than a mask, and for some people weight loss is the key to long term resolution of sleep apnea symptoms. The best thing is for you to consult someone experienced in sleep issues.

When I first had sleep apnea I was 5'10" and 185. Though obese people tend to have more interior tissue built up it's not a cut and dry factor. People that have over bites can have sleep apnea. You see them oral devices that move jaws forward. Look at football players. They have necks as big as their head. :)

the mouth guard never came up as an option (or at all) when i was tested, ended up seeing them advertised later by a dentist somewhere, think online..

wondered and first i'm hearing that they work, but for who?

i ended up loosing ~ 40 lbs and not positive yet but pretty sure my sleep is way better now with no machine

I'm meeting with a dentist tomorrow who invented one of the mouth guards. He and I are going to partner up to help truckers with sleep apnea. I'll post tomorrow or the next day about our meeting. Oh, by the way, they didn't mention the mouth guard because they don't make as much money on it. They make a lot more on cpap machines.

The real profit comes in from supply's. Sort of like a printer and ink cartridges.

Look at all the medical TV advertisements. You never seen that stuff 20-30 years ago. Invent something then convince everyone they need it. They don't care about you. They care about the money.
