I took a year off from the road and went into the office. Decided I didn't like working in an office. I went back onto the road three weeks ago. During the previous 11 months I have managed to lose 115 lbs. I've done this by eating at a daily caloric deficit and moderate (mostly walking) exercise.

It had gotten to where I was so fat, I couldn't walk from the parking lot into the store without my back hurting me and shortness of breath. In the beginning as I started losing weight I would walk a mile or two. Then, the weight really started to come off and I can now walk for miles without pain.

I love to walk. Therefore, I have started to identify places to walk along my I-5 route, Seattle to L.A. It's amazing how many places there are to walk even when you're on the road. Not to mention, just walking around the areas where I'm loading or unloading. A few places I've discovered thus far are:

    1. Central Point, OR at the Pilot truck stop. Right at the back of the property there is access to a really nice bike path that goes for miles and miles.

    2. Weed, CA at the Pilot there are miles of available walking areas around there among the pines.

    3. Irwindale, CA at the Miller/Coors brewery. There is a beautiful bike path that leads to the Santa Fe Dam, it meanders through a nice nature path. Goes for miles.

    4. Corning, CA at the casino there are walking areas around there where you can also go for miles too.

I've discovered some nice walking areas near shippers and receivers all over the place. All that is needed is to just get out of the truck and start walking!

Yeah, good idea to walk, we all agree.Glad you lost the weight. I need to.
Just be careful where you go. Dangerous world full of bad people, and they seem to love to be around trucks.
Some places I go scare me just driving through, much less walking around the area.
Wooded areas around truck stops ? No way.
Be careful walking in strange places. People get killed / robbed every day.

I like this thread. I was where you were once with weight as well. I couldn't walk to my mailbox without my back screaming in pain from my weight. I lost 130 lbs and now I like to walk. I just don't do it often enough.

One of my favorite places to walk is at the company's terminals. It's a pretty controlled environment and usually big enough. Not very exciting.

Also, I found a new place just last night. Here at the T/A right near downtown Nashville you can walk downtown easily and safely. From the T/A you can walk 2 blocks to the south towards the stadium. Take the Woodland Street Bridge over the Cumberland River and you are in the heart of downtown Nashville. My new favorite walk. The view is great going over the bridge and when you get to the other side head down 2nd Ave N. at the corner and a few blocks later you are in the heart of Nashville's music and bar scene on Broadway. It only takes minutes to get into downtown and it felt safe.

Great thread by the way. Looking forward to the responses.

Doc, that's why I posted the thread, I'm hoping that other drivers will share their favorite spots to walk while on the road. Perhaps others might read here and get motivated to get out of the truck and move.

I'm 5'11" tall and ideal weight is 175 lbs. Last winter got lazy and didn't watch my diet and jumped to 215 lbs. Started walking and within 2 months dropped 35 lbs. Now 5 more lbs. to go. I was having trouble putting my socks on and just doing that would get winded. Doctors say walking is better than jogging and jogging will actually age you faster.

From what I have seen on the street behind the T.A. in downtown Nashville, I would not walk very far. Unless they have cleaned it up in the last 2 years, that used to be a bad area.
Proud of you people losing the weight. takes a lot of determination.

Bosselman "Pilot" off I80 in Grande Island, NE. There is a small country road that heads west away from the truck stop. I walk that for an hour or so out and back. Nice as long as the mosquitoes aren't in season. :biggrin_25524:

I try to walk as much as I can and much prefer scenic routes. However, remember if you're in a less than desirable area, 30-35 laps around the truck is approximately 1 mile.
