From what I understand, if your endocrinologist states "I hereby certify that in my medical opinion, the applicant is able to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle (large truck or motor coach) in interstate commerce while using insulin.", insulin dependent diabetes is not an automatic DQ. Then you need the same from the MD prescribing the Adderall. So on the face of it, those 2 things are covered. Then you have to pass the DOT examination, and then, as you said, the company or their insurance carrier can say "no thank you". Then there's the garden variety depression issue that might or might not be another hurdle. And again, even with medical card in hand, you are ultimately at the mercy of the company, with the deck certainly not stacked in your favor.

Federal Diabetes Exemption Program. I dont know about anyone else, but section A, the ROE so to speak, makes my head spin. Say wha?

My hours trucking in the 70s and 80s were much more grueling than those allowed in the regulated environment of today. But I think I could have easily done those hours in my present physical condition without problems.

Yeah, its a lot of crap to wade through only to get turned down by companies. That makes the whole thing a questionable endeavor. The FMCSA promises to complete the application for exemption in no more than 180 days. How accommodating of them.

Then again, there a couple of seasons of IRT I havent watched.

Hello all... new to the board...I too am a 40 something thinking about a career change into trucking and I take the generic form of adderall..I think if your honest with the DOT doctors upfront you'll have no problems. read below:

"WHO REVIEWS AND INTERPRETS THE LABORATORY RESULTS?"

"All drug test results are reviewed and interpreted by a physician (Medical Review Officer (MRO)) before they are reported to the employer. If the laboratory reports a positive result to the MRO, the MRO contacts the driver (in person or by telephone) and conducts an interview to determine if there is an alternative medical explanation for the drugs found in the driver's urine specimen. If the driver provides appropriate documentation and the MRO determines that it is legitimate medical use of the prohibited drug, the drug test result is reported as negative to the employer. "

that is only half the story
each company has thier own restrictions
adderal would certainly throw up a red flag with a lot of them

What d apuig is saying is the MRO, who works for the DOT, has the discretion not to report drug test results to an employer IF the testee provides documentation from the prescribing MD that the drug in question is being taken for legitimate medical reasons.

I registered as a member to thank everyone that provided pertinent and documented responses. I have spent a great deal of time researching this subject, and this thread is hands down the most informative (as well as rational) discussion that I have come across. Thank you for your time and efforts.

Old post, but popular question. Knowledge of what ADD/ADHD is and what the medications do to help it have come a long way since 2010. There are non-stimulant medications that one with a diagnosis can try. Talk to your doctor. Now Adderall, it provides the *ability* to focus, not greater focus where you were able to focus already. And the wakey-wakey is a side effect, not the thing you're actually taking it for. You can get the same thing by buying an energy booster or a rockstar. Before you go all crazy, my son has moderate/severe ADD and I'm not anti-stimulant.

OP is making a big deal about how unfair it is, although he underplayed it originally and said it was mild, took a very low dose, only been on it a couple months. Sounds like someone just wants an upper. Drink a cup of coffee or a rockstar like everyone else, and I hope by 2015 you've stopped using the R word to describe things you think are unfair. Life isn't fair.

For more information, Dr. Amen of the Amen Clinics is the premier researcher of ADHD/ADD using brain scans that light up the functional areas of the brain. That would be where I'd suggest anyone get more information if they're interested. He's got a website and has written several books. He also has determined that there are different kinds of ADD, and not all of them "make a person pay attention to everything" therefore making them the perfect truck driver. Just saying.

I'm an O/O who takes adderall.

I've been on the medication for the last 3 years. I've owned my own truck for the last 6 years, and been driving since '99 and I've never once had a problem. Usually within a day or two after my physical or drug test I get a call from a 3rd party Dr. who asks for me to send him a copy of the prescription, or screenshot of the bottle, and I'm good to go. I've not once had problem. That will be the first thing I looked into if I happened to look for a local M-F gig. Some people do need medications and don't abuse it. It is funny you can be a slob, take your cholesterol pills, and still drive one beat away from a stroke. Yet narcotic gets thrown around, and it's all out drug warfare. As some have said, some companies just don't want the liabilities... Which I guess I can understand. Then again, Probably 99% or accident's class A drivers are in, they aren't impaired. It all comes down to hours on the road, and knowing your limits. The way these major schools are pushing kids through just to get a truck covered is asinine. Anyhow, hope you guys have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Dunno guys... Adderall scares me. I've taken it once (experimentally). Maybe it helps you focus, but I sat in front of my moms new computer, setting it up, networking, for like... 7 hrs (setup and explore), rolling my tongue around my inner bottom lip. No way I could drive safely on that...
