Too little shut-eye a health nightmare for many

Too little shut-eye a health nightmare for many

WASHINGTON - With late-night TV watching, Internet surfing and other distractions, Americans are getting less and less sleep, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.
And all this sleeplessness can be a nightmare for your mental and physical health, CDC experts cautioned, calling sleep loss an under-recognized public health problem.

Sleep experts say chronic sleep loss is associated with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular disease, depression, cigarette smoking and excessive drinking. More here.............http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23392649/

weight gain?

Didn't know sleep loss could affect your weight. I do know I have gained 40 pounds since starting this truck driving went from an 8 to 12-14. As you probably know my biggest truck driving complaint is not enough sleep. At least now when my hubby teases me I can say, "wellllll, if you would just let me sleep a little more". lol

Wonder if it affects your ability to get over illness. I have had this flu for almost a month now. no voice for over 3 weeks (much to my hubbies glee) it is actually starting to worry me enough to have my mom make me a doc appointment.

Thanks Cybergal. Your my favorite here on truckers forum.

Actually, you should see a doctor. I fought the flu this past time out.

Fortunately, I am a big time drug criminal (by federal standards) and carry illegal drugs on my truck at all times.

I was sick for about a week. I had to take a reset on my 2nd day of feeling ill, thank God!

I eat antibiotics daily and managed to break the fever within 30 hours of stopping. I still felt like crap for a few days afterwards. But I stayed on the antibiotics for 7 full days.

If you run your body down, and fail to get some kind of treatment. It always takes longer to get over. Hence the reason for always carrying antibiotics on my truck. Legally prescribed or not.

Now I'm out (of drugs), and will have to see my family Doc for a new script for everyone. I say everyone, because I get enough for everyone in the family (multiple scripts). Not smart by "medical" standards. But, I'm the only one that uses them without a visit to the Doctor. And only when I'm on the road. If I'm home, I go see the Doc.

I love small town life

We have to stay out another week still before going home again. If I can't shake it by then mom is going to get me into see her doc.

Wish I could see my doc but he is in Iraq. Nasty woman doc took his place so don't go to the hospital clinic anymore.

I can't believe you only had it for a week, lucky you. If you got rid of it with antibiotics it must be bacterial and not viral. I thought the flu was viral.
I can't believe hubby didn't get it at all. lol

Got to be not enough sleep!

Absolutely your lack of sleep affects your body's ability to heal. So much of the restorative sleep takes place during your REM sessions, and those mostly occur in the latter half of your sleep cycle. So if you are only making it 6 hours, you are shorting your body of the sleep it needs. And if you don't sleep deeply enough, you lose out on the important Stage 3 & 4 sleep that occurs earlier in the night. You wind up with the catnaps of Stage 2, and your body totally gets run down.

I dunno...viral or not.

Only thing I know for sure. I went to see my mom and sister before I left out. Both had the flu.

My sister is a Practitioner. I always call her for clarification of symptoms. She said eat the antibiotics, and get as much rest as possible. Drink lots of fluids.

Guess I'm lucky either way. Only time I really get nervous on the road, is when my sister tells me to find a Doc, wherever I can.

Of course, this is the same sister who hauled me to the ER for a suspected heart attack...the whole time I am trying to tell her, it's my hernia acting up LOL. yup its that painful

I can function for a day here and there on 6 hours of sleep... can do okay with 7. But I feel my best when I get 8 or 9 hours of sleep, with a few of those hours before midnight. (My mother used to tell us kids that one hour of sleep before midnight was worth two hours of sleep after...?)

I've often heard that people require less sleep as they get older. Well, I'm 53 and it ain't happenin' yet. In fact, it's getting more and more difficult staying awake in the evenings.

I actually listened to a medical segment the other day on XM, discussing this very thing.

The Docs said, No Way! You need just as much sleep when you're older, as when you are 20.

But, older bladders and body aches tend to wake older people up more often. Then some stay up, if the time is right.

He also said this is why older people tended to nap more often than younger people. They didn't get a full nights rest to begin with.

I'm up now, with my body aches...the sins of my youth.

Lots of sleep.

I don't seem to have that problem. I get 6 hours of sleep a night no matter what. I've done this for years. I eat twice a day and take nutritional supplementation. I feel great and can't remember the last time I drove tired. If the load is late, oh well. Me first, job second.
