Vitamin Supplement Causes 200 to Lose Hair, Fingernails Vitamin Supplement Causes 200 to Lose Hair, Fingernails 8/18/08 Quote: Nearly 200 people across the country have been sickened after taking the vitamin supplement Total Body Formula, United Press International reported Sunday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that users of the supplement suffered loss of hair and fingernails, as well as nausea, joint pain, and diarrhea among other symptoms. The liquid supplement is one of more than 12 supplements that have been recalled in the past year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Some batches of Total Body Formula and Total Body Mega Formula contained excessive amounts of the minerals selenium and chromium. Selenium, a trace mineral, is only needed in small amounts for good health, the FDA said, and too much of it can cause the symptoms listed above. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,405361,00.html

I am continually amazed by people who watch a 30 minute infomercial designed to make someone a millionaire, and believe it to be gospel because it's labeled as "natural". This natural herb/remedy/cure thing is out of control. EVERYTHING put into your body has a ripple effect somewhere down the line whether it be FDA approved or snake oil salesman approved. I realized the natural herb thing has soared over the last decade or so and don't mean to step on anyones toe's for sure but I think it's a shame these product manufacturer's and distributor's can make outrageous claims with little to no testing on longterm or negative side effects.
