Driver Roadside Medical, Sleep Pointe to Create National Sleep Lab Network for Truckers

Roadside Medical, Sleep Pointe to Create National Sleep Lab Network for Truckers
3/9/09
Quote:
Roadside Medical Clinic + Lab and Sleep Pointe LLC have teamed up to develop a national sleep lab network in order to immediately address the critical issue of obstructed sleep apnea among professional truck drivers.

The joint venture is designed to bring services to the driver versus taking time off the clock routing them to other locations for treatment.

"Roadside Medical Clinic + Lab and Sleep Pointe LLC believe this initiative will play a major role in reducing healthcare costs for companies and provide preventive care for thousands of professional truck drivers," says Bob Perry, president for Roadside Medical Clinic + Lab and vice chair for the American Transportation Association Wellness Council.

Yeah right . Drivers are going to volunteer for studies that could result in restrictions being placed on them . This is Pilot and Sleep Pointe LLC setting up money making facilities that will make it easier to mandate this testing .

if it is determined you have sleep apnea it is a law that they must notify the dot and you will be disqualified untill you get a sleep study and proof you are recieving treatment

you sure?

112 .. are you sure about that notification?

My understanding is that if you get a sleep apnea test and test positive the doctor can not notify anyone unless you authorize them. This is covered under the Health Information Privacy and Portability Act (HIPPA).

Now, you are obligated to notify the medical examiner that gives you your next DOT physical if you have a positive diagnosis for sleep apnea.

There are issues if you are a company driver about notifying your company but that would be company policy not a DOT issue.

I have sleep apnea. When I tested positive the lab did NOT tell anyone. I told my carrier about it to get routed back home to get a second sleep study and CPAP for treating the apnea.

IF you even THINK you have sleep apnea. Do not let the concerns about what it will do to your DOT medical card stop you from getting tested or screened.

IF you are worried about the sleep lab notifying anyone about the results of your test use a medical facility that offers medical confidentiality.

PDMD (Dr. John's clinics) also offer sleep studies at major truck stops using portable equipment that you take back to your truck and use overnight. Ask PDMD about their privacy and notification policies.

If you have sleep apnea getting treatment will make a GREAT change in your life. I wish I had gotten tested and treated years before.

in pennsylvania thats what the doctor told me. i was reciently in the hospital and was woken by the nurses because my heart rate dropped. i did not know that sleep apnea can actually be fatal (a guy down the street just died a few weeks ago went to sleep and never woke up 53 years old) and because of that i now have a pacemaker for insurance to keep my heart rate up while sleepin if my rate sows down

Now that's something else drivers have to worry about . If they have to go in a hospital overnight for something they'll be watched while they sleep .

Here are the instructions for the physician giving a DOT physical
Quote:
391.41 (b)(5) There are many conditions that interfere with oxygen exchange and may result in incapacitation, including emphysema, chronic asthma, carcinoma, tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis and sleep apnea. If the medical examiner detects a respiratory dysfunction, that in any way is likely to interfere with the driver's ability to safely control and drive a commercial motor vehicle, the driver must be referred to a specialist for further evaluation and therapy.

well i went in for shortness of breath, found i had a blood clot in my leg that broke off and went to my lungs i was lucky could have went to my heart or brain and killed me or a severe stroke, it was like somebody put a plastic bag over my head.

little did i know this is common for anybody that sits for extended periods, truck drivers, office workers , etc.
any body over 40 is at elevated risk

the clots can not be dissolved they put you on blood thinners and the clots will gradually dissolve over time may take a year or more maybe less and i will be short of breath till they are gone.
it's standard procedure to be on heart monitors while in the hospital and after a couple of days i finally got into a deep sleep and my heart went down 2 times to 40 bpm and once to 25 bpm with 70-100 being normal thats when it was determined i had sleep apnea and with my heart slowing down as much as it did they installed a pacemaker that only operates when my heart slows down for insurance to keep it going.

there was a guy right down the street that was diagnosed with sleep apnea and he wouldn't wear the cpap machine and they wanted to give him a pacemaker but he refused and while i was in the hospital he died just went to sleep and his heart stopped and he never woke up 53 years old
