Ha ha ha! AT&T is inferior and Apple is finally going to make the iPhone available in a top tier network. I will finally have one the day it comes available. Wonder what ole' Luke would have t say in an AT&T commercial about how far behind they are in technology? :biggrin_2559:

This isn't confirmed yet. Apple would have to do quite a bit of work to the iPhone to make it work on Verizon's CDMA network, and Verizon would have a lot of work to do to make it handle the capabilities of the iPhone. One example: Verizon can't multitask.

Also, AT&T is rolling out a major upgrade this year. All carriers are doing work, but AT&T is getting down and dirty.

One more thing, what does everyone have against AT&T? I've used numerous other carriers, up to and including the almighty Verizon, and I have great luck with AT&T. This is especially true in their customer service.

I like my iPhone and I'll stick to AT&T.

You mean OTHER than the fact that Luke Wilson is on my TV screen every 12 seconds? :biggrin_2559:

In all seriousness, for me it actually IS their coverage. The Verizon commercials are correct (at least right now.) I can say this not from an "emotional" standpoint - but from a ton of data - because in my business I talk to OTR drivers (who are using cell phones 99% of the time) out on road every day. I also use a "peer-to-peer" program to log into their laptops to help the fix issues or install programs every day as well (and of course to do this they are using one of the cell phone provider air-cards for an internet connection.) As a result, I started keeping a spreadsheet documenting 3 things: (1) how often is the call dropped, (2) How fast and how stable is their aircard internet connection, and (3) what provider are they with. On average I'm on the phone and/or their aircard about 20 to 30 hours per week total combined with drivers from coast-to-coast. And I've been logging the results for almost 5 years.

As a result of thousands of hours during this time with all of the providers we KNOW the "order" for coverage right now and it goes like this: Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and TMobile (from best to worst.) And I am ONLY speaking about coverage here - not customer service, devices, etc. Verizon and Sprint are pretty close in this study, but AT&T drops noticeably behind and TMobile can be downright painful.

I was about 2 days away from swapping out my Verizon Treo for a Droid until I saw this thread. Now I'm waiting to see what Verizon says officially about this. Why? Cuz I want an iPhone. I agree with you wholeheartedly about the device superiority, but it has always been a show-stopper because it required AT&T. My suspicion in that A&T's boat has been floating recently largely due to this deal - so they better do some serious updating to their network if this rumor is true or they're going to hear a large sucking sound the moment that folks can switch providers. Personally, I couldn't care less if I could surf the net and talk at the same time. I'm not that coordinated.

If the tide shifts after a massive AT&T network update then we'll report that shift here as well. It's not that we have anything personally against any of the providers. It's purely data driven, at least for us.

I'm not saying Verizons network isn't larger, However the technology isn't on the same level. I worked telcom infrastucture, and more directly the system that became alltel and now verizon. I know the back end of their networks inside and out, not just the end user portion.

If verizon puts the iPhone on it's network, you will see either a severly limited and locked down device, or major network headaches.

As big as this news is, the iPhone isn't the leader anymore. Verizon already has the Droid and after using both, the Droid beats the iPhone hands down. All the iPhone has going for it is apps, and the Droid is gaining them rapidly.

I think this is a matter of preference more than anything. I've used the Droid, and I didn't like it at all. I know quite a few people who switched and shortly went back to their iPhones. I also know people who love the Droid. So in that respect, I don't think it will make a difference.
