A TV tray works just as well. It folds up, and can get put away when not in use.
And can be used at your seat, or on your bunk.
Personally, I think anything that will show your laptop WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING, is NOT a good thing.
But, that's just my own humble opinion.

Or you can use brass or chrome pipes and fittings -
I bought a desktop monitor clamp on the edge of your desk stand and what this does is clamps on the back of your desk and ya screw in 4 screws to the back of your screen except i took this and clamped it under my passenger seat and mounted a plexiglass platform onto the plat of the stand and there ya go

As far as it being visible from the drivers seat mine is always loaded to a map program of where I am going with several windows loaded at different points of the route ahead of time. I only use it if I have never been to a place before. Its no more dangerous than using a paper map and is far more powerful. Its saved my ### more times than I can count when I am given bad directions or need to find a way around construction or a wreck -
a buddy of mine mounted on the passenger side but with thick velcro on both sides over a surface he accommodated on the seat.
