One of the few interests I enjoy on down time is flight simming with FSX or 2004-ACF. I know there a few others out there so, I thought I'd start a thread here about that-tips, tricks, disasters what ever. Can discuss hardware, software, VAT what ever the heart desires.

With the all the other games out there for PC and consoles, not much mention of flight simming unless you're a die-hard simmer and actually surf the dedicated boards like Avsim or Flightsim.com. So here's one on this forum.

Personally, I'm using FSX with two different Saitex control systems with various payware and freeware. My personal favorite is the Cessna 414A with the Cessna Citation II a very close second-both allow access to the smaller fields where one doesn't need to be too concerend about heavy AI traffic like one finds over the larger airports. Gets kind've long sitting at the threashold of 7L in Phoenix as a long stream of commercial traffic comes in.

    Anyway-here it is.

Anyone who is interested-Wilco Publishing ( probably one of the best publisers of Flight Sim add-ons with the most realistic models) have posted edition 1.1 of thier newly released Piaggio Avanti II. There were, and still are, issues with both the 2D and Virttual cocpits. While the current fix has solved a lot of the issues, they havn't gone far enough with this current version to fix all the issues.

I guess we await the next version.

This may be the last Wilco product I purchase. I was really dissapointed with the Tilit-rotor ( not very frame rate friendly) or the fact that to fly the thing. I had to go out and buy a Saitek throttle-joystick combo to more accuratly simulate a cyclic and collective ( and it worked by the way). With the Avanti-well we waited since March for it to be released and when it finally was-it wasn't finished.

And this from a company whose greats include the 737-Pilot in Command and the very cool Cessna Citation X ( which was incredibly well done and extreamly detailed). Hard to belive the same people released this thing.

Version 1.1 is out for FSX only at the moment and is running about 30.00 USD. We are still awaiting the release of the FS9-ACF version.

If anyone is interested, there is a free, open source flight sim that rival's Microsoft's. You can fly anything from a Cessna to a 747, including WW2 fighter planes and bombers even modern day fighter jets. The graphics are beautiful. It's a pretty big download, but it's absolutely 100% free.

    get it here:

Any chance you could post some pics of the panels for the aircraft? and btw, thanks for the tip and the link. I'll look at this a little more closely but judging from the models, it looks like where MSFS was several years ago. Does look interesting though.

I think I disagree with the opening lines of thier on-line manual though- way too many pay and free-ware devolpers offering a wide range of products for MSFS users-XPlane now as well.

But-hey-free is free. Can't beat that.

What WON'T work with that laptop? Come on. you posted that to brag! It runs nicely on mine, AMD Athlon x2, 2 ghz, with 2 gigs of ram, and a crappy ATI GPU that ATI has deemed an antique no longer worthy of supporting.

No you can't beat it. I got turned on to it because I use Linux, installing it is a click away in the Ubuntu and Debian repositories. But there are Windows, Mac, and versions for just about every other OS you can think of.

To be honest though, my favorite flight sim right now is gl-117, which is another free one. It's a fighter jet sim with more of an arcade feel. It's not too involved, which is perfect for playing around with on short breaks, like when your backed into a dock getting loaded or unloaded. The controls are easy, you just use a mouse, and the dog-fights against the AI controlled opponents gets pretty intense.

You can get that here http://www.heptargon.de/gl-117/gl-117.html
Windows version down at the bottom of the download page, only a 2 megabyte download. I admit I've never tried the Windows version, but it's there. I have a lot of fun with this one.

Well, it's nice to see that there are some others into flight simm's. I am both a simmer and a real world pilot.

I have been a beta tester for X-plane since the version 8 release. Love all of the simms I have flown with, to include some of the virtual airlines like Delta.

My first simm was from Microsoft, but back then the graphics were hidious in comparison to today's systems.

I have a couple of short videos on my myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/kc130

I can try to get some others posted, along with some great screen shots. Love doing screen shots. The make good Windows screen backgrounds.

Have you guy's ever worked with any of the airport scenery or traffic systems? Some of these are great. The guys did some great work in getting them together.

Be Safe and Have Fun !!!

Went back into time an re-installed FS9 on the system-forgot just how much stuff I have for that. I've been able to re-install all of my guage packs, my add-on scenery packs and not to forget-lots of aircraft which wouldn't work on FSX. Spending more time with FSPS and re-doing panels then actually flying.

Still getting preformance hits on the frame rates though not as bad as FSX. I think it's the ATI Mobile Radeon card in the laptop. A buddy 'o mine has a GForce card in his HP and seems he's not having the preformance hits I'm experencing. We both have the same HP but different graphic cards. His is also a 32bit wheras I have the 64bit dual processor.
