I write Custom Poi files for Garmin GPS units. I'm wondering if anyone else here writes Custom Poi files (Poi = point of interest).
For those who aren't familiar you can save locations to your favorites, but they generally only hold up to 1,000 locations. Custom poi files can hold far more than that. Perhaps in the millions of locations and they can be accessed and searched by GPS units that are capable of using Custom poi files like Garmins. Most GPS manufacturers units can't use Custom poi files so be leery of any that can't use "custom poi files". I have fellow drivers who bought GPS units that can't use my custom poi files and it's a shame as I have over 2,050 of our delivery, backhaul and motel locations on memory cards that I offer (to my fellow company drivers) for a scant $20/each. $10/each to swap memory cards with me and upgrade to the latest files. As I'm updating my files frequently!
***My files and or file writing services are not for sale! I'm merely stating what I do with these files within the company I drive for. I want to add this so no one here thinks I'm advertising. ***
Once these files on pre-programed memory cards are installed into a GPS the driver can easily and quickly find the locations then hit the "Go" button and be on his or her way in seconds instead of spending several minutes looking up locations on a map or tediously entering the address info in every time they're sent to a new location. This improves a drivers time efficiency in that he spends less time looking for locations and more time driving and delivering. Thus utilizing his HOS for what they were intended for earning money!
So is anyone else writing Custom Poi files? Let's share tips and suggestions on how to write the files in a user friendly way for those who don't know anything more then how to use them.
