A picture review of the MCP110 by Qualcomm

Well, I've been playing with the new MCP110 that has been put in my company truck and I have to say it's pretty sweet! I've been hoping to find some more info about it online somewhere but I haven't run across much. Are there any other drivers in here using this Qualcomm model? Here are some screen shots if you've never seen this thing:

The initial boot up is pretty slow and I've even had it freeze up on me a couple of times. Overall it performs pretty well and consistently.

Much like a GPS device, it has the general disclaimer about being distracted with it while driving. However, it does not function while the truck is in motion.

Here's the home screen. I guess it's kind of like a desktop with a display of apps to choose from. You'll note that my company must have only went with the minimum cost package as a lot of the system functions are not enabled. I wish that items that weren't valid simply not be displayed. It kinda sucks being able to see what I'm missing out on!

The main reason I have this thing.

The HOS logging grid is a very nice feature in that it is rather similar to paper logs. Any movement of the truck is automatically logged in the driving line while the other lines of the grid can be assigned manually. You'll note in the picture that it also flags state border crossings (BRX).

Right now, I have the ability to change or edit any line in the grid except the driving line. All edits/changes must be accompanied with a noted explanation. Usually "mis-keyed" will do. I'm told that drivers being able to edit our own logs will be taken away soon. I'm not sure why? Basically, I think it's a good setup and easy to use. The software is based on windows and it seems pretty solid. I wonder how long it will be before it starts being hacked into?

Ok, I've been meaning to add some things that I didn't know when I posted above.

The MPC110 has a USB port! I've found this rather handy as a power source for things that charge via a usb cord.

This thing also has a built in stylus.

It's a little hard to find though. I didn't even know it was there until I turned it over and tugged on it.

Using the stylus to type is much easier than using your finger.

If you'll look at the "EventLog" function in the system app, it seems that all kind of things are being recorded and logged. I wonder what a "Watchdog Pet Thread" is?

One thing that disturbs me is that my username and password is viewable in these log reports. This is not cool. Why even have a password if it is so easily breached? I do not need to be logged in to see this. If I had a co-driver I could see theirs also. If someone else uses my truck they could see it. If a mechanic works on my truck he would have access to it too. This really needs to be fixed!

A couple of times my dispatcher has called me up at home and asked how many hours do I have to drive...? I said "can't you see it on your computer?" I guess old habits are hard to break. Fortunately, there is an online driver portal to access your hours and status from any pc here: https://dhos.myqualcomm.com/dhm/

You can also view and print your daily logs. Just remember to read the *terms of use*---> "Disclaimer: You acknowledge and accept that there are risks associated with the use of the Internet and you assume any and all responsibility and liability related to (i) security, loss, storage, privacy, and confidentiality of information transmitted via the Internet; (ii) review of the privacy policies of any site visited by you via the Internet; and (iii) protecting any username and password provided to you for use of the Internet. Qualcomm has no control of and assumes no liability or responsibility for information, data, content, services, products (including software), transactions, or communications that you access, download, purchase or engage in, through use of the Internet."

Here is a screenshot of what our eLogs look like when viewed on paper.

And here is what a complete days log looks like with all of my changes of duty. Certain changes are automatic like when I start driving or when I stop the engine it goes into "On-Duty". So if I stop for a lunch break or a "10/100" I have to remember to manually change it to "Off-Duty" or I'll need to edit it later. Note that when I cross a state line, it makes an entry thus the repeated lines of "Driving".

Here is what it looks like after an edit has been made.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Apparently, there are two blue screens. One that blocks out everything and partial blocking blue screen that only blocks your logs and I don't think that could be hacked. If HOS were able to be opened, you could simply keep clicking the off duty button every two or so miles while driving down the road.

I think the partial block does allow you to read messages though. It's probably also good if you have access to use the media function or navigation app. <--- that's what I'd like to hack!

I wish I knew anyone else in here who has legit access to all of the features.

Looks like window CE, Try a usb keyboard with a track ball. I still have a NEC mobilepro900c with CE on it. It will use most usb drive and mouse/keyboards.
To hack it will take some tools and time and know how.
Cmoney was one of the hacker/devs working on the mobilepro 900's afew years back.

Can you use another object other than the stylus or your finger? Currently I use a pen to touch my GPS screen and drag the map around etc. It's a little better for pin point accuracy touching points of interest like truck stops or rest areas stuff like that. The stylus looks kinda short. I use one of those long bic pens, works great, Just curious if you think that would work.... They will be installing elogs in my truck by the end of next month sometime.

Pens will work on the screen, but like dwmac71 said, plug a USB keyboard into that sucker, it makes typing SO much easier when sending messages or loaded/empty calls. I don't use pens because i've seen other units where drivers have scratched the screens up using a pen. Mine is going to the shop tomorrow morning because it's having an issue with the screen turning on and off and freezing...i'll let everyone know what the issue was when it's fixed so you might know what to look for if you ever have the same problem.
