Finally broke down and chose a direction.....

Acer Tab A100 (dual core processor, Android 3.2 OS, 7" screen) running CoPilot Truck V8. I got a cool holder coming from Amazon for 12 bux. I bought the Tab at Wally World for $250. Not only will it do the GPS thing but it will also be an MP3 player, email, weather/traffic as well as run the host of Android apps available. I get the mapping software I wanted, the features I would like to use and have a multifunctional device for about the same price as the stand alone GPS.

If by "posted roads" you mean that they are roads that are built by the city/state/county and are reported to the map-makers as permanent public roads, then yes, they would be in there - or could be put in if they are new when the next map update were to be released as long as the manufacturer was so inclined. If they are designated by the DOT as "no trucks" then you would have to turn off the truck restrictions (in some brands) or go into "car mode" in others to be able to have it use those roads.

If by "lease roads" you are referring to temporary or permanent roads that are made by corporations (like large farming, oil, mining, etc) and are NOT designated by the DOT as publicly-recognized roadways then no, it is not likely that any GPS map database will have them. There are "breadcrumb" capabilities on some models that would show you the track you took once you took it, but not any that allow you to "build your own" roads into the on-board database yet that I am aware of.

I today checked the price of the Garmin Nuvi 465T online. Walmart Canada quotes $348 and Walmart USA quotes $247 for the same item despite our dollars being almost on a par. This is a greedy anti-Canadian attitude by a company whose management (?) learned nothing from last year's J. Crew rip-off pricing debacle in Canada:

As a Canadian, after so many similar actions such as those against BC Lumber, stopping the XL pipeline in favour of buying conflict oil from brutal regimes and introducing border crossing fees for air passengers, it is difficult to see the USA as a friendly nation that wants to do business with Canada on fair terms. Are Americans proud of the greed and sense of entitlement that so many American companies show towards their neighbours?

Most have a way to route for HAZMAT loads, don't they? Are there any that don't?

i'd like to know that myself.

cuz i heard there were glitches. software isn't compatible with the new 4.0 android. and they were right. my aunt has the acer a200 i installed copilot on and it's not working. i also have it on my phone and for some reason. i have no voice as soon as i download the maps. don't know how it happens. as copilot was the first trucker gps i used. and it was on my sprint phone running 2.3 android. then i bought the pcmiler. then i used my phone some time after and i haven't had voice since. i'm now running a verizon bionic. 2.3 and 4.0. still no voice. it speaks at first load up. but once the maps are downloaded. no voice.

Interesting. I'm leaning towards getting an ipad...when I can afford it...but only because my experience with an android device (HTC Thunderfart) was bad from the get go. Apple devices just work. I know, no 4G...yet.....but I have a 4G hotspot that works great.

The google maps on the iPhone works flawlessly . Ironic, ain't it?

blueleader: You are pointing your anger at the wrong people. It is the greedy Canadian companies that are ripping us off. They may be American owned but it is the Canadian management that rips us. There is also a problem with the greedy Canadian retailers who pressure US suppliers to not sell directly into Canada. Home Depot is a great example. You can drive across the border and buy almost anything at HD for 30 to 70% less than in Canada.I can understand maybe a 15 % higher price in Canada due to the smaler market and more expensive distribution costs. I was surprised to see he 720 Rand GPS for a mere $30.00 higher in Canada.

Snowwy, did you have good luck with Sprint? Thing with Sprint
is that they're usin WIMAX for their so called 4G. But they're supposed to be
swiching to LTE which is what everybody else is using. If Verizon doesn't grandfather
my unlimited, I would be tempted to switch...
