Newb internet over the road question - US and Canada

I'm a Canadian about to start a long haul career. I'm actually waiting for a call monday to find out if I have a truck or not. After doing an internship on the road for a month staying at different Flying J's and Pilots, i found myself paying 2$ and 5$ here and there to use the wifi. And maybe I got lucky but for what I used it for, it was fast enough. But it all adds up.

Using my Canadian cell in the States for Data costs an arm and a leg and my left nut.

I've been looking at Mifi from Verizon and getting it billed to an american address (truck stop) but at 50$ a month for a gig or two of data, would it be smarter to just pay for 1 year of wifi through Pilot/ Flying J and plan my trips to stay at those places every night?

Now I do own an XBox and would like to bring it with me on trips, I'm aware playing online would be a no no with the Wifi.

guys I appreciate the information. But after moderators edited my post, I think the point was lost. It has nothing to do with Canada. I'm asking what would be more cost effective, paying for Mifi or a 1 year Flying J/ Pilot subscription. This thread should never have been moved here.
