well if you really only plan on using it for Copilot and lets say surfing the web a little and other small general software the Averatec is a good choice. They last a long time, and you can buy them a Walmart. (so if something goes wrong, you know how walmart is, just bring in your receipt and they will trade it for a new one.)

Yes I know you may be thinking "a compute from walmart", trust me on this. Averatec are cheap, last a long time (now they are not super powerful laptops) but they will do all and anything needed for truck driver usage. Now they will not play any new top of the line games, heck non of them will unless you want to spend $1800+ on a laptop.

Averatec laptop from $500 to $800 will do everything you need to do, last a long time, and you have the option in the rare case something goes wrong just take it back to walmart with the receipt and trade it back in.

I really like the toshiba sattalite. I'v had them and had good luck with them. Best buy has some with the big 17 widescreen for $1000 and under. 15 inch for $800 and down. Get the extended warrenty. I know they are a scam but I droped mine out the truck door once and trashed the hard drive and best buy replaced it free with the warrenty. Of course I got it back totally blank and had lost my software bundle so make sure you keep track of it.

stay away from dell. they arn't that tough and there service sucks.

 

don't go out and buy a real expensive computer. the computer takes a few beatings in the truck from driving down the road. i got mine from a pawn shop a few years back , paid something like 200$ for it and haven't had a lick of problems with it. and it's a dell inspirion 1150. watch out for the gps systems, they use alot of memory and i just removed mine from my computer and it has so much memory and available space. it took up 5400. kb of space up.

 

What else do you plan on doing with this Notebook?
3D games?
Run server appz?
or just browse pRon, GPS, spreadsheets, Email etc.
If you are NOT going to play games or do video editing I would suggest anything you can afford and does NOT have Vista.
Skimp on a few features and dump as much RAM in it as you can.
You can add an external hard drive or flash drives for storage.

ATI Radeon Graphics card ( havnet tried any games yet, got to get home to install one )
built in WiFi card
SD card reader , My Treo PDA phone uses it so it is nice to be able to swap files.
New tech PCMCIA card slot.
BEAUTIFUL 14" wide screen
DVD-RW CDRW

I found this to be the best deal for the money, You can do you own research
OH I did wipe off Vista and put XP on it.
My Sirius S50 was not comapatable my GPS would work properly ( I run Delorme), I did not like the ActiveSync replacement for Vista.
and some of my other hardware was a pain to work.
Besides Vista looks like Mac, and I plan on installing RedHat Linux or Fedora on this machine and get away from Microshaft

 

Look at Delorme for a GPS solution
and OpenOffice.org for a FREE alternative to the over priced Office.

My post still stands get a decent priced NB and dump as much RAM in it as you can.
