Anyone running Linux on their laptop on the road?

    I used to be heavy into Fedora before i started trucking and was wondering if anyone is using Linux for WiFi and mapping routes?

    I did, but not doing internet much on the road anymore. I use Mint on this one, boots up much more quickly. No additional problems with connectivity.

    I use it. It does fine for WIFI and "aircards" are easy to setup. I haven't looked into routing/mapping.

    I wouldn't mind something to keep an eye on the truck, this looks interesting.

    i meant mapping with a comparable program as microsoft streets and trips

    its better than any gps, and very flexible for what we do.

    is there something comparable in linux?

    i was worried about the aircard, i use verizon, i am going to play with it when i get a chance

    i actually loved my fedora, just didnt want to be on the road and having to untar things until they worked right, so i chose windows for simplicity

    if i can get linux to do what i want to do, byebye windoze

    I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop. The laptop (being old) didn't like the Unity desktop on 12.10 (though, it was fine with Unity in 12.04), so I replaced Unity with the XFCE desktop.

    I never ran Fedora on any of my machines; I knew someone else that ran Fedora, and that computer was always acting up. When I was researching Linux based operating systems, there was a reason why I finally chose Ubuntu, but I can't recall why....

    that was intense, seems a lot like Streets & Trips, but it looks complicated

    Might want to look at GpsDrive and see if it's in a repository to make things easy. http://www.gpsdrive.de/index.shtml
    Doesn't sound like it has turn by turn navigation if that's what you re looking for.

    Another option is to run Windows apps in WINE but Microsoft Streets and Trips has a "garbage" rating and no maintainer. :tard:


    You will probably spend lots of time with this endeavor getting things to work.
