Hopefully you mean for a passenger while truck is in motion....

But yes, cell phone hot spots can be used while in motion

Verizon has a plan for $20 per month but thats only 1 gb i dont know how long that would last they reccomend 2 gb but still cant really tell me how long that would last and its $30 3gb $40 etc. Or you can sign up at fuel stations and use there wifi while you are there and its $20 per month.

If you have a "smart phone" you can use it as a "hot spot" for internet service. Failing that Verizon has a good product that sits in the truck and sends a signal to your laptop.

Currently we have two smart phones that allow them to be used as "hot spots" This allows us to be connected to the internet( the one who is not driving) with minimal disconnect. We use verizon as our provider with a 20 GB data plan. Now before anyone jumps on us for having such a big data plan, We drive team and are on the road a lot. We have disconnected our home internet so when we go home we use the phone for that as well.
Previously we had T-mobile for a provider with a shared unlimited data plan. They suck! Once you hit 5gb then they choke back your speed, not so with Verizon. With tmobile if we were watching netflix or some other video it would buffer a lot again not so with Verizon.
No matter who you choose as a provider I would suggest 5 gb to start

If you don't have a "smart phone" capable of "internet sharing" or "hotspot use, and don't care to upgrade, Verizon and ATT both have dedicated "wifi hotspot" devices that connect to their cellular network and provide wifi data for up to 5 devices. They can be bought on 2 year contract, or bought outright for Month to Month use. Look for LTE enabled devices. They can really move data fast when in LTE markets.

Well of course i wont be using a wifi device in my hand while driving. I cant us my AT&T iPhone 4S for a hot spot thats way to much money a month for that. I would like to have my Skype on while driving so my kids can see me and talk to me while on the road either on my laptop(laptop sitting in the passengers seat) I have skype on my iPhone but stupid AT&T dont have unlimited data and that 3GB gets used really fast. Didnt know if there was some type of "Bubble or Dish" i can have on the truck thats for internet.

You can go with a Cell Phone Hotspot.

Or a Portable/Device Hotspot, most major carriers have them. Really don't want to get into carrier wars.:biggrin_25522:
If you go with a portable device I would go with a Carrier and Device that does 4gLTE.

Both ATT and Verizon (as far as I know) are good about keeping the data overage rate the same as the base rate. ie. 5 gb for $50, then $10 per gb after 5 so even if you go over, it's not like they'll rape you with overage charges. Outside of cellular data and piggybacking off of flakey hotspots you can find here and there, there are no other viable internet data options for truckers.

Make sure you keep your video quality set to a very minimal setting to conserve bandwidth, and make sure you don't leave software running that is constantly tapping the data stream to do this, that or the other (such as an email program, constantly checking for new email every 5 minutes)

Nope, we all use cell hotspots or mifi type hotspots. You gotta pay to play. Incidentally, the price for on the road communications has gone down dramatically. A lot of us older guys remember having 800 numbers for the house, calling cards and nationwide pagers. Verizon will give you unlimited calling and 5 gigs of data for $90 or 10 gigs for $140. I was paying $400+ for that 5 years ago.
