Hi y'all, I've been driving almost 9 months now. I use a rand McNally tnd 510 GPS. Every time I get into a big city the map and directions freeze. Is this s common problem with all GPS's out there? I've gotten by with this one so far, but is like to get one that doesn't freeze. Any help would be appreciated. I don't use it as my sole navigation, that's what my trusty atlas is for. It's just for a quick reference.
GPS, which one works best?

Shouldn't bee freezing, maybe there is something wrong with it.

Been using a Garmin NUVI 50 LM which is NOT one reccomended for big trucks. I haul gas and fuel to stations and we have tons and tons of customers in and around the Charlotte NC area. I have never used it as my primary locator, my company gives us a profile sheet for each location stating directions to the stores and tank sizes for each product and any bits of info that may be helpful with the servicing of that particular customer. However, if I end up with a split load where the product is going to be dropped at two or more locations ... then the Garmin more than pays for itself. Just type in the address and let it do it's job ... still, because it is not a trucker GPS, I have to be careful about where I let it take me so as not to be put in an awkward predicament. Most of the time I just put it on the "map" setting and watch for the street names to come up from the profile sheet so I'll know where to turn before I get to the intersection. As I said, it's not my main source, just a tool and cross reference to make life a little easier. I generally use it 4 or more times a week and have never had it hang up on me yet. I trucked along just fine for 26 years and this year I broke down and purchased one on sale from Amazon and it's worth it's keep as long as you keep in mind it's limitations

I have used the garmin, cobra and have had the rand mcnally 710 now the 720 which I love. You need to make sure you connect to a computer and do all your updates on a regular basis. Just got all the new map updates on the 720 and it works great and has a lot of new features. But this should not be your only source for trip planning. I use my gps, atlas, customer directions and always google maps on my smartphone with the satellite image so I know what to expect when I get to a new place.
X-Country Thanks this. -
This should be posted here.

As Mark mentioned, if you're looking for help specifically with your Rand McNally, you can post another question in his support thread.
Since this one is a more general question and already has some replies about other units, we can just leave it here. There are also a lot of GPS threads in this forum:
