Stuff happens while trucking - spilled liquids, who knows what getting into the laptop keyboard. You can still have a functioning computer without a keyboard by using the "on-screen keyboard."

Windows XP has this built in (not sure about Windows 98 or older). Simply use your mouse to open Windows explorer (left-click on "Start" then right click on "explorer") Now drill down into C:\WINDOWS\system32 to find the "OSK.exe" file. OSK is short for On-Screen Keyboard.

Now a nifty keyboard pops up on your display, which you can use your mouse to select the keys (or if you happen to have a touch-screen monitor, you can use your finger or pencil eraser).

If your keyboard is flaky, and you want to have an easy-access button on your computer's desktop, simply make a new icon by left-clicking on the desktop, selecting "New" then "shortcut" then in "location of file" enter: C:\WINDOWS\system32\osk.exe and there you go!

Hope this helps save someone some short-term frustration.

Good information. Also: a cheap USB keyboard can be purchased at any of the "Big Box" Retailers (WallyWorld, KMart, Meijers, Office Depot ect) for less than a "Jackson".

And DON'T throw that laptop away (or take it to a PC Repair Shop....unless it is under warrenty). You can usually get a replacement keyboard from someone on eBay for a reasonable price and install it yourself, if you are even slightly handy with a small screw-driver.
