A few weeks ago I bought a GoPro Silver Edition with a headband and a suction cup mount. Also recently got the LCD display. This is an awesome camera. The Mic is extremely sensitive and if hounding already know, completely versatile...there is a mount practically everything (and yes, even a harness for dogs with a mount. The video function has three settings...narrow medium and wide, with wide providing a 180 degree view. Better than any dashcam out there.

The Silver has a 10mp camera and the quality is also far better than dashcams, able to record in 1080p. It also has the ability to take still pictures from 5 (med view), 7, and 10mp (both wide view only). The only downside is you can't really zoom. If you want the camera to view the world as you do then you'd use med or narrow for videos. This camera is not really designed to take close up shots from afar, as there is no zoom (it's intended purpose is for recording action...like sports).

The other bonus feature is it has WiFi so you can remotely access and control the camera from your phone.

The real downside (zoom doesn't count). You will get maybe 5-7 hrs when it's on standby but when recording this will jump down to an hour two depending on if you use the Battery BacPac. And even less with the WiFi on so keep it off unless actively using that feature. So if you want to do a continuous record you will need to have it on the charger via the usb cable (and if not available, spare batteries). You will also need a microsd card to be able to record or take photos. An 18gb card will be able to record 2:11 hours of video set on 1080p at 30 fps (an hour less at 60 fps). Quality of video will not effect record time.

The only other downside is the price. Most mounts will run you $40 with some only being half that. Batteries are also one of the cheaper accessories. The camera its self is also an expensive buy so depending on how crazy serious you want to involve your self with this camera can cost you from just the cost of the camera to well over a grand or especially if you wind up buying two cameras or three or more (yes, people do that). But seriously, I suggest getting at least one mount. I use this camera as a dashcam (which it will see more use when I go to California for my brothers graduation from USMC Boot Camp). Despite the high cost and the battery life, this camera is WELL worth the money. Oh, and hey, it comes with a completely waterproof housing so if you get frustrated and throw it in the toilet and change your mind, hey, it lives.

They make a "battery replacement" that goes into the battery compartment and plugs into a USB port (includes a cord that is maybe 6 feet long). With this, battery consumption is no longer an issue if you can get USB port power to the camera.

These can be bought directly from Switronix or from B&H Photo (NYC online retailer)

Actually that's provided by default (it's built-in). Only mount that allows access to the ports is The Frame and on that point, not a recommended mount for outdoor use. Of course keeping it on the charger while in the car is a superb idea but awayb from a power source you are back to square one. Only extension is the Battery BacPak, which plugs into the port on the far left on second picture. BacPac looks like third pic without the LCD.

    And for the curious...

And a random photo that has nothing to do with this post...

there's an easy fix to that problem. this will give you continuous power all day long.

    6' or 10' mini-usb to usb cable
    [IMG]

    usb 12v charger

I use a 3-in-1 12v power adapter that I bought from the T/A (truck and accessories shop side), and upgraded the 10a fuse to a 15a fuse because I also power my gps and cell phone charger. (my 12v igloo is on another power source by itself).

I also recommend getting 1 or 2 of the 64gb class 10 sdhc cards from amazon, they are $36 right now.

that will give you 13 hrs and 10 mins of straight recording at 720p and 30 fps.

I run mine all day long. Start it in the morning and stop it at the end of the day. with the cable, 12v charger and the 64gb memory card, you will never have to stop and change batteries or memory cards again.

I don't think it's A GoPro. They are coming out with Hero 4 but that's 100 more than the current model

Actually yes, GoPro is coming out with an "entry level" model and an upgraded model [4] at the same time. And the Entry model is $130 but have not looked into what this one can/can not do. Except for the heavy-duty video creators and movie buffs, I don't see any really need to move from the 3+ to the 4 (if you already have a 3+) The entry model may be a great solution for those on a serious budget to get some interesting vids

The 3+ Black could do 4k but at only 15 FPS.
