Ok yall, family business closed a couple years ago. We still have multiple PC's to sell. I am sure all of them have at least a little bit of sensitive info on them.

Can anybody recommend a good software program to wipe the drives clean, but still retain the operating system. I have googled this, and there are literally dozens of programs out there, and its really hard to disseminate between all the different offerings.

DBAN is your solution. I use it all the time to wipe hard drives. I have a copy on floppy, disk and a thumbdrive. It's a linux based program and has several variations to wipe a drive. Some are DOD wipes. The longer the wipes, the longer it will take the system to finish. So if you use like the 37 wipes, plan on it taking 24hrs to finish. Once the system starts wiping, remove the disk and start another wipe on a different machine.

Here is a link to dban>> Darik's Boot and Nuke
    http://www.dban.org/download

It will come in a ISO image and you will have to burn it to a disk. Make sure the system boots to that disk and follow the instructions. It's quite simple program to use. If you have OS on different partition, you can choose the rest of the drive to wipe. I would recommend wiping the whole drive and reloading the OS.

Does it shred, and or overwrite all the info on the drive. And how safe is it ???

Nothing is a for sure thing. I have used this program for years and even studied some of the drives after wipes. You might find bit or pieces but nothing you can make sense out of. Glad that worked out for you.

Your not going to sell the PCs with an OS like windows?
I don't know how legit that is...just an FYI... I wouldn't do it.
(I dont need any more reasons for anyone to try and come after me) :biggrin_2554:
Anytime I have sold PC gear, I have wiped the drive. Boot&Nuke is excellent. But for most, a simple 'dd' with zeros (via unix) is fairly adequate...

They can sell a PC with a OS on it but it has to have the disk of the OS included with the sale. OR the COA label needs to be fastened to the machine of that OS.

Gotcha...I just wonder how that goes when PRE-INSTALLED OSs. My new laptops came with NO CDs anymore and some recovery partition used for reload if needed.

Of course a year ago I moved to Apple and never looked back at that dam license bull...
