Are you getting discouraged, Driver?

This post is for those who have quite a few pounds to lose. Maybe it’s 50lbs. It could be 75lbs. Hell, you may have 100lbs or more to lose, before you’re looking and feeling healthy again. So, with such a high number, are you feeling discouraged? Are you thinking that it’s too much to lose, and that it will take too long? Well, let’s break it down with real life numbers.

As of the date of this post, it is August 16, 2010(although I admit, I typed this out over a week ago). With it being August 16, that would mean there are just over 18 weeks until that dreaded Christmas dinner. Now, 18 weeks may not seem like a long time, HOWEVER, if you were to start on a decent diet and exercise system, and lost a very realistic 1 pound per week, that would translate into your being 18 pounds lighter. Not a bad start, really. And what if you decided to be a little more diligent in your training and eating, and lost 2 pounds a week? 36 pounds gone before the holidays. Now, if you’re a much bigger person, with more to lose, you could potentially see a 3 pound per week loss. 54 pounds gone before turkey time. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

And what of trying to do what you can before summer? There are just over 41 weeks until June, 2011. Plug in those numbers again. 1 pound a week loss is 41 pounds lost by next summer. 2 pounds a week is 82 pounds. 3 pounds a week is 123 pounds. So, even the truly large truck driver can do something about his body image and composition before next summer. All it takes is to realize that it’s all in small steps. Lots of small steps add up to a long journey.

An old saying that I’ve come across from time to time goes like this: How do you eat an elephant? – One bite at a time.

So, Driver, are you ready to take that first bite?

Losing anymore than 2 llbs per week is not recommended by Doctors. Most of the loss will be water, which in turn strains the heart and lungs. Losing more than 2llbs per week will cause the body to go into a catabolic state,it will use muscle for fuel on a calorie restricted diet. Brain function will be impared and sleep will not be deep enough to hit a REM cycle adequate enough to be properly rested.

That's old medicine and old ways of thinking, Trade up. If that was the case, The Biggest Loser, and shows like it wouldn't have people losing what they do, and getting into the best shape of their lives, while still losing 10-15 lbs or more a week. Those who are morbidly obese can lose more, faster, until they get closer to a normal weight.

Those contestants are pre qualified physically for that show and medically supervised,24/7. They're losing water content at the cellular level and muscle atrophy from the lack of nutrients and recovery time. They don't have the cardiovascular conditioning to carry their bodies to the point of burning enough calories to warrant that weight loss as fat. They're working out "too hard" to make fat the primary fuel source, they should be at around 60% of maximum heart rate, basically being able to carry out a conversation while exercising. The level they're working at doesn't allow for proper recovery and cell regeneration, with a lower blood volume from sweating the heart/lungs work harder to send nutrients and oxygen to the muscles. The body is only efficient at burning fat as a feul source at low heart rates,at high intensities much like what we see on the biggest loser the body is breaking down Glycogen and ATP(adenosenetriphosphate) as the primary feul source. When ATP has been spent from the blood stream, the next readily available source is muscle(and it must be broken down). Once Glycogen is gone from the blood stream, the next available source is the liver. When someone feels like their "hitting the wall" that is the body "getting ready to "shut down"/passout to make sure there is enough Glycogen for the brain to continue functioning. Glycogen is the only feul the brain uses. The body will replenish glycogen to the liver before it sends it to the muscles. The body is always in a state a stress and imbalance.
Muscle burns calories, rapid weight loss causes muscle to catabolise and in turn the individual burns fewer calories at rest. The only way I can see these people exercising the way they they do and be able to do it again the next day is rehyrating/feeding through an IV drip.

Massive weight loss looks good on TV, in reality when people do this un supervised. They'll be lucky if they don't die from heart failure.

"old Medicine"? This is basic human physiology.

Basic human physiology allows for more than 2lbs/week fat loss when you' obese. I agree that the TV weight losses are highly monitored, and I would never suggest that everyone that is obese will lose weight like that. However, one CAN lose fat greater than you say. It's been done time and time again. However, I've already noticed you've decided to become my little troll of negativity, following me along the forums.

You say that to lose fat you must work at 60%, no greater. And yet studies have shown that high intensity interval training works greater than a straight 60% work load for fat loss. Do a little research, and expand what you think you know to be right.

Yeah great. Keep giving advice on health issues.

Interval training only works(the way you think it should) greater in highly conditioned athletes, not obese people. Any program will clearly tell you it takes 6 weeks+ to start burning fat in this manner. Why? Because it takes at least 28 days for your body to develope a physiological response to conpensate for the stress. Without recovery the body just breaks down, you need muscle to be able to recover and heal(grow) in order for it to burn more calories.

If you really want to do this, put down the muscle mag and go to University.
    Stop dishing out ill advice.

Losing 1-3 lbs/week for the morbidly obese is ill advice? Give your head a shake.

It's obvious from your posting in other threads that you have a problem with me, all because I don't feel that drivers are in as desperate straights as you think they are, and that I feel each individual is responsible for the position they're in in life. I don't subscribe to the theory that the carriers are evil(although some may be), and that drivers don't have choices. From your postings, it appears YOU do.

Just as a follow up on the benefits of interval training vs the slow cardio method.

New research shows that interval training works faster than slow cardio for fat loss (Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise: January 2011 - Volume 43 - Issue 1 - pp 115-122)

New things are always coming to light, and it's never done in a university, or by doctors. Universities, as a rule, start teaching things once they've been in practice and proven. Thus, new things are never really taught in universities. Also, doctors tow the middle of the line, and as such would never say it's okay to lose larger amounts in smaller times. However, doctors also said no one could run a 4 minute mile without the human heart exploding. Roger Bannister did it, and once he did it, it was being done by people all over the world.

I suggest EVERYONE do their own research, and then try to make an educated decision on what they think will work for them, and what will not. After that, it's all trial and error.
