Just a Few Thoughts

Listed here are just a few thoughts on how I think a Truck driving school like the Accelerated course at Fontana should be conducted.

As Fontana is an accelerated course the selection criteria should be a little different Older more seasoned drivers. with some knowledge of the road or at least some type of experience.

After the School there should be A set of standards that a driver must meet not just a set time as some will be faster and some will be slower.

As was said the real training was done on the road I myself saw none as I was pretty much just there to put miles on the trainers truck so he could make money. and I blame this on the company as they (it seams to me) penalize the trainer by taking money from there pay where I think they should reward them by putting them on a sliding scale that is higher then regular drivers. As the Trainers miles go up the pay decreses to the point of a regular team. And Trainers really need to be Experienced drivers not someone with only months or even just a year on the road in that time no tickets and no accidents just may mean lucky not good.
As I have seen in a few cases. Communication needs to be better sometime check with the trainer and the trainee on the road not make the trainee have to call in and complain about the Trainer or be afraid to say anything as they are afraid of the trainer. You are supposed to be out to train professional drivers not just get more trucks on the road.

Well there are a few of my thoughts I will add more as they pop into my little pea brain.

Unfortunately, this is how most companies run their trainers or 'mentors' - most are fairly new owner-operators who just want a second log book, and teach their trainees little to nothing. You WILL learn on the road, but it will be while you are solo. Just take your time, and don't do anything you don't feel comfortable with. Don't expect to be able to do everything over night. What you really learned in their 'school' is how to pass the CDL test. At some companies, the 'teachers' they have at their schools are just drivers who can't be on the road for various reasons, many times because they lost their license. Sad but true. Some companies, like Swift, have 'trainers' that just take on students to make their truck payments. Some only take female students, so they can try to 'get some.' There ARE some few trainers - usually in company trucks - who take the training seriously. but you're right - most students are terrified to do anything to upset their trainer, regardless of how wrong what they're doing might be. But it's the same with the dispatchers, driver managers, or whatever you want to call them. most have never been in a truck, and have no idea what you're up against out on the road...and frankly, don't much care. Welcome to the world of trucking...
