Decline of miles in trucking

I don't know if it is less freight or more truckers but I have seen a decline in miles since I started driving a truck. Changing jobs doesn't help...I have done that several times. I have been in Florida for 3 days waiting for a load and all I can think of is how low my paycheck is going to be. I did make 40k last year and even though that sounds good, it's less than what I've made in the past. Maybe I should just be greatful to have a job! I'm going a little stir crazy. Anyone else going thru this?

Yep! I think it's a symptom of the current economic scene we're all in. I was under the impression that trucking was immune to economic downturns. But I think it's hitting everyone right now. My miles are low but I'm seeing alot of truckers with empties sitting in truckstops waiting for a load. Hopefully it'll all change soon.

never seen it this bad did trucking for 23 years on my own and it was so very hard the past 3 years I parked it and don't see anyway trucking will ever be the same. such a shame to many greedy brokers, shippers out there to compete with their crooked ways. they cut your throat every way they can mrs fcd

Does it pay more to be a broker or dispatch? I see a lot of suffering here.

Most people that I have spoken to haven't seen the economy as a whole get this bad in their lifetimes. But, if you put the trucking industry in perspective it is still a good career choice.

It is up to you to decide whether you are going to compare your current job as a truck driver to your job as a truck driver a year ago or..... whether you are going to compare your job as a truck driver to almost every other industry in the country.

Good? Bad? You choose, it's all about attitude.
