Italian pride on display as Vineland honors Columbus

Quote:
VINELAND -- Christopher Columbus might not have been the first to discover America, but his voyage changed the course of history and for this, he deserves to be celebrated.

That was the message delivered Monday by Dr. Frank DeMaio, a local historian, at the city's annual Columbus Day celebration on the steps of City Hall.
"It was Columbus who first made Europe aware of the fact that there was an immense continent filled with wealth and raw materials that would change the history of the world," DeMaio told about 100 residents and elected officials who gathered for the ceremony Monday. "Because of this discovery, Columbus had the greatest effect upon the history of the world than any other man."
Quote:
U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2, said his family first came to the area 99 years ago from Sicily, and later went on to start a successful trucking business based in Rosenhayn.
He said of Columbus' voyage, "it's probably what our grandfathers and forefathers had in mind for opportunity."
