People often use hotshot to describe other types of hauling with a one ton.

You are right that hotshot generally refers to the oilfield. When they want or need something they want it NOW, that is hotshot.

 

If you are strapped for cash and need a starting point, what's wrong with starting with what you have? I have a Dodge Ram 2500 short bed with 5.9L Cummins Diesel engine and have been pulling a 40' gooseneck flatbed for some time with it. I have it liscensed for 26000 pounds and have stayed as busy as I wanted.

Anyway, it's a place to start.

Hi Roadmedic I'm trying to get started in the hotshot freight business I'm looking for a little direction on getting statred.No experience except for pick up hotshot years . Could you guide me to start in the right direction.I will buy the truck when i feel i can really see that i will make the money. What i want to know is license, truck a descent company anything you could tell me I'd appreciate .Read your post thats why I'm contacting you any help would be good

 

questions :

What is the main differrence(s) between the HD and non-HD trucks ? Is it only Chevy and Dodge that make the HD's ?

Are diesels better than regular gas engines ? And if so, why ? or why not ?

Back years ago you could buy non HO (high output) and HO trucks there was some HP difference but today all the trucks are sold HO.

Diesel trucks make TQ and that's what it takes to move weight one reason you don't see gas 18 wheelers built today!

 

He was asking about HD (Heavy Duty) vs non HD, not HO (High Output) vs non HO.

Now days it seems that they are just calling their ¾ and 1 tons heavy duty (or super duty in the case of Ford) vs their ½ ton pickups that they sell the most of.

You will get a lot more miles out of the average diesel engine then gas engine as well as better torch as BAYOU HOTSHOT pointed out.

I am most likely going to be buying a Chevy or GM....So I guess the question is what can I expect to get out of a Chevy or GM 2500....Probably something in the 2002 to 2006 range......thanks.

 

There are way too many variables to be able to give an estimate on MPG. People van give you a wild guess but a guess would be all that it is.

What speed are you running?
How heavy are the loads you will be pulling?
How arrow dynamic are the loads that you will be pulling?
What kind of terrain are you running, flat or mountains?
What rear end gears does the truck have?
What percentage of loaded vs unloaded miles will you have?
Is it a dually or a single rear wheel truck?

All will impact your MPG.

Try asking on a Chevy truck forum. You will find more users that will have experience with those trucks there.
