You need to follow the commercial truck chain requirement.

Most of the chain laws start at 10,001 lbs.

yea, in some places every vehicle on that stretch of road needs chains.
Cars, pick-up's trucks, everyone needs chains.

I spent some time in australia, and they have a mountain range down there, and parts of that range require every singe car to have chains on them.

Each state has different regulations and classifications when it comes to snow chains requirements.
As a pro driver I adivise you to check it for yourself due to your vehicle classification..... here it is.

I hot shot and keep tire chains in the truck just in case, and yes, in CO at least, they will check if you have them during certain months and it's a hefty fine if you don't. If they have a weight exemption I haven't seen it, but figure it's better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. They don't take up enough room to be leaving them at home.

If you plan on hauling into Canada you need to carry chains during the winter month's beginning on Oct15th. Don't know till when though.

Normally its Oct 15 to April 15 but again it depends on where you are. Here in Ontario they aren't required at all but once you get to the mountains in Alberta and BC they are required. I carry them year round in every vehicle (mini van to class 8 ) as they don't take up much room and im always out when the road are their worst as I run heavy wrecker.

Yes you must have chains. In CO the fine for not having them can be as high as a $1,000.00.

In BC Canada, chains must be carried for the trailer too, for one axle I believe.

In Oregon, even 4wd requires them if towing, commercial or not, in addition you need drag chains too, ie on the trailer if it has brakes, which if commercial it probably has brakes. As previously mentioned check out each state, likely if you have enough iron for CA, OR and WA you will have enough for just about anyplace.
