In my research I have found that cargo vans make .80-.88 per mile, Sprinters .85-1.00 per mile. Also most of the 12-15 different companies I have looked at are not KEEN on paying deadhead, but then who is? I think it is safe to say you will never get home. Every single company I have talked to has said one way or the other that you are expected to go otr. Some have even hinted that you can expect to get sent places and have to deadhead to get to a good waiting spot.
I suppose if you can own (no payments) your own van and pay for your insurance up front things might not be so bad. You can bet that if you get hired by someone that you will be doing the otr thing and sleep in your van. Since cargo vans are less than 10000 gvw you do not need a DOT approved sleeper nor worry about HOS. The person you work for WILL take advantage of that. Be VARY, VARY, aware of the fact that if you haul Hazmat (placarded) you will fall under DOT and you will need to sleep legal. -
You don't "have to " go anywhere . Experience will teach you dead areas to avoid .
It's better to avoid hazmat altogether in a cargo van . There aren't enough loads to make it worth the hassle . Placarded hazmat loads do make you subject to FMCSR which means you have to show the hours on duty in the last 7 days . If you worked over 14 hours or drove over 11 hours any of those days you won't be in violation but may not have many hours left on the 70 in 8 days . -
Are you still driving cargo vans ?
I have only a few months OTR, but I agree with what you said. Never getting home is not true. Which companies are you currently working with ? or which companies would you recommend ?
