I've seen Dodge fans complaining about that . While the GCWR is best in class for the 3500 Ford offers higher GCWR for the Class 4 and 5 trucks . The Dodges are probably more capable . Dodge just gives lower numbers to avoid customers requiring employees to have CDL's .

Knew a guy who loaded a D7 on a tri-axle gooseneck behind a 97 3500. Low range 4x4 1st gear and I saw it. Course when He turned in the yard 2 axles twisted out and the dozer slid off.

Add the truck GVWR to your trailer GVWR and subtract the weight of your truck and the weight of the trailer and you will have the load you can responsibly carry.

I have a dodge ram 3500 with a 5.9 liter gas engine with 4wd in it .I pulled a gooseneck trailer that weighed 4500 pounds and sometimes put 7 tons of rock on it.

My trailer had a 14000 gvwr and my truck only had 10500 GVWR so my max is 24500 pounds , legally.

My truck weighed 9000 pounds , my trailer 4500 pounds , and the rock weighed 14000 pounds, so I was hauling 27500 pounds, and was overloaded half the time.

So the max amount of rock I could haul legally was 24500 -13500=11000 pounds =5.5 tons

If you don't tag right you will get a ticket for not being tagged right. If you are overloaded you will get your ### skinned. Most cops cant figure out what the heck a pickup is supposed to be able to carry so they wont hardly stop you.I have never been thru a set of scales with a pickup and gooseneck before, so I don't know what the heck they do to you.

But you need the biggest engine you can get in a pickup .That will increase your truck GVWR . Try to keep your trailer weight as low as you can get it.Go aluminum if you can.

Folks trying to haul a 10,000 pound trailer around and then trying to haul 20000 pounds on it are kidding themselves. You will wear a transmission out in no time and you cant get off the pavement without getting stuck.

Get the big truck.Tote the small load.

You might be able to pull alot, but good luck getting 40,000 lbs stopped.

    Hey texan 007
    Thanks for posting pictures.
What length is you trailer and what is your over all lengh.
What do you have your truck taged for.
    I just purchased new 2011 f450 crew cab w/bed an 2010 kaufman 50' wedge.
Have insurance in place and have filled for my o/authority. Still in their 10 day waiting period.
I know its over the legal length limit with the bed on the truck (67'9") but most are getting by with it they say.
I only tagged the truck for 26k for now to see how it goes.
Full of fuel and gear that will only allow me 11800 payload max if you managed to get it loaded properly.
I could go up to 34k but right now i'm not sure if its worth the extra trouble and expense with IFTA and IRP.
