RV Transport questions...

I had time in a truck before I did this 10 years ago. I had a friend that was doing it and mentored it as well.

I also have a business background to understand the cost and other angles.

 

That makes sense. I have commercial driving experience with box trucks, not hauling trailers. I have personal trailer hauling experience but from what I understand that doesn't mean much. My brother has his own business and a good tractor to do trailer hauling. His goal is to move over to rv hauling and bring me onboard. We are just not sure if we will find a company that will bring me on.

 

I had similar experience to yours and I had no problem leasing on with my company. So you shouldnt have a problem finding a company to lease on with.

Right now we've had some slow times. I know the multi unit guys are running slow too. They are running cars and other items to try and stay loaded.

Get a newer truck to use. I started out last year with an 04 Dodge and have had several issues with it causing down time. Looking back on it now I would have been better off with a newer truck which would hopefully hold up better. I've averaged about $750 per month in repairs this year so far. And I have an appt on Thursday to get a few things looked at before the snow season starts.

AND, I'm very thankful to the Post Office and luv'd my years service. Kind'a rare today, but never handled mail and the pressures the "Mail Man" puts up with today since the internet "kill'd" the Post Office's 1st class letter business/volume.

That being said, I'm now retired and ready to git back out there as a O/O.

I have a solid old "mule" of a 1989 Dodge 4x2 dually (10,000+GVW) with just under 120K miles, with the early mechanical Bosh, non-intercooled, non-cat-converter exhausted, Cummins with the 727 non-overdrive auto.

I use her to carrying a 9ft.truck camper which just scaled at combined total of 8480+-lbs while hauling a 300lbs+- utility trailer with a load of scrap metal (cleaned up around the garage) today for a total of 9000+-lbs.........Hey the $21 of scrap bought a case of Yingling!!

I also use her with camper to tow my outboard hydroplane race trailer (3-5 boats and 5+engines). www.hydroracer.net

She's a good old "Mule" and can keep up loaded to go racing, once spooled/boosted up with most loaded 7.3 Fords and some Duramax's on the hills up to 80mph (When the gov kicks) between Erie,Pa.,>back at my toy box/warehouse and asheville, North Carolina where I currently reside/"snow-bird".
Yes, Really.
On the flats, the newer rigs leave me in the dust.

Manages 17MPG totally empty and around 10MPG with camper and race trailer.

What I'm considering Is using her with a gooseneck and 5th wheel hitches to do some occasional "Hot-Shot" local and OTR work. Self and/or contracted/leased-brokered , U-ship?

Some drivers I've talked to say the old Dodges do well. Others tell me to keep her for personal use and look at newer Dodge and Duramax mules.
Thing is, this mule is payed for!


Again I'm comfortably retired with a decent civil service and military disability pensions and out of debt.
But, The "Woman" and I are getting bored fast!

Any recommendations/thoughts? and what trailer do ya'll like/think will work?....Was NOT impressed with the "Take-3" elec brake trailer I used while at the Post Office.
Still have my CLEAN class-A CDL, but ignorant to log books, needed permits, insurance, etc. :smt102

Thoughts on flat loads vs car hauling?

We are new "Snow-Bird" "Tween'rs" who reside Summers in Western North Carolina (Marion, next to Tom Johnson's R/V sales) and Jan.- March in Central Florida (Crystal River). Also own my former residence in Erie, Pa. area that is now rented (but may become another seasonal residence if they get any farther behind), and a 30x60 steel building/"Toy-box" with 20 foot door that was used as a loading area for grave vaults that were cast inside and could store/garage a Tractor when off duty.

Anyone with a complete working set-up looking to retire, move on, liquidate due to health, etc.......accounts included?

I'm stacking multiple runs at a time, halfway through a four trailer run and theses are single pull CDL to Canada

 

I tried the RV trailer hauling and lost so much money it was pathetic. I believe the secret would be to get back hauls but how do you make that happen? I had to quit because I was using the money I made on fuel. The company I drove for was always busy with trailers Leaving Indiana but I never had anything heading back.

 

Done it since 2003 and rarely see a backhaul.

 

Wow! Whats the secret to making money then. I liked the job but with very little income I quit.

I only got $1.35 per mile.
