To be painfully honest, I am one those people that never really fit in, have few friends, not even enough for a decent reference list excluding relatives. I've always had trouble getting my idea's across, being misunderstood and so forth.
Given my total failure to even get a call back, I'm wondering if I'm just plan asking for work, info with the wrong words.
For Hot shot I'm saying:
Hello, I'm tired of office work so decided to see if the transportation industry would offer me something. I am looking for a firm to train me in truck driving, and preferable one that I would be likely to stay with.
I have a CDL-A would be happy to drive your vehicles, or I have a Ford 2012 F-250, with a Tag ( bumper pull) hitch rated at 14k, and Im willing to add a gooseneck adapter for up to 15,500 lbs. With the correct opportunity Id be willing to acquire a trailer.
Advantage to hiring me?
- I have Hazmat and , Tankers endorsement plus a TWIC card
- I have no Semi Van experience, there far I have no bad habits , however you train me is how Ill drive your equipment.
- I stayed at one position for 10 years and another for 9 years.
- In 1999 I worked on an Y2K team, 100% nationwide travel.

I have a lot of business experience with taxes, OSHA, TCEQ including fine negotiations, and supported a safety manager, including doing some of the safety training. I choose a discount driving school since I do not need three weeks in a class room to learn the basics of governmental reporting and basic safety.
Like all CDL schools, mine only gave me enough drive time to pass the CDL road test. I will need to learn everything, shifting, all of it. Looking to be based out of a Houston Tx, terminal. Preferably with parking for my personal vehicle.

I am wondering if my inabilty to get work is due to my poor communication skills

Your first line is a turn-off - not surprised that nobody is interested. It makes you sound like a job-hopper who is just prospecting for something that you might like better. I'm not going to invest any time or money in you.
You need to make it sound like you know for sure that this is what you want to do. Stop calling people and go see them.Northern Lights, Mr.Shifter, Richter and 3 others Thank this. -
Why don't you just get a CDL and then you will have a lot better oppertoonity. I'm not goign to pay to train someone who might be interested in working for me.

Your communications skills are fine. But lacking experience which is a requirement to get you hired is the problem

You shouldn't be "tired of anything", you should be "seeking new career opportunities within the transportation industry"
Don't put negative wording on a resume or job seeking site. Nothing negative about previous jobs.
While you may not have bad habits because you have never driven a semi... that's two negative's in one sentence. The only thing someone might remember is the "bad Habit's" by the time they finish reading your resume, IF that is they get past the first sentence.
You don't "prefer a company to stay with".... you ARE going to stay with them ( reguardless of weather you are or not )
My advice... get a professional resume writer to write up both your resume and any blurb you want to put on a job seeking site... think of it as a cover sheet, which really is what it is. IF communication is your week point, then let someone else deal with that.Last edited: Feb 3, 2014

Face to face is always better. As d o g said, keep it positive. "Hello. I have a CDL-A with endorsements, and I'm looking for a beginner position."
I constantly see ads for companies looking for CDL drivers. If you go talk with them, they'll have an easier time assessing your character in person. You can do this. -
I think your communication skills are fine. I think your first line could be better. Something along the lines of im looking for a career change. Your best bet though would be if you got your cdl first.

says he has a CDL-A with Tanker and Hazmat. No experience yet, though.

To OP, really just have a resume and do as many walk-in's as possible. You really don't "need" the resume and most Driving HR people don't want one, but it's also a great way to be able to fill out every application without looking everything up.
As for references, previous supervisors? As long as they are honest people and you did a good job working for them, that shouldn't be a problem. Co-worker, just because you weren't BFF's doesn't mean they won't give a reference... just keep it professional and use their work number.txrmac Thanks this. -
