    Depends.

In Indiana if I have a trailer rated 10,001 LBS or more I need a CDL A. Generally, if you are pulling 26,001 you need a CDL A.

You need to look at your state laws and where you want to travel to.

Most of this is covered in threads in this section. Read through them and check your states laws.

The rules are interpreted different by every dot officer. I agree, it's easier to have a CDL-a and not need it than not have it and need it. But to not need it the truck needs to be 26,000 gvw or less and trailer 10,000 gvw or less. But if your truck and trailer are maxed out anyway you'll still need a class A. Tomato potato.

My Ohio Class A CDL says on the back tow >10,000 lbs
    Combination >26,000 lbs

If I was you I would get a Class A CDL and then if you only drive straight trucks your covered. The problem with Class B CDL's is you will always end up having to upgrade. Class B CDL is non combination vehicle greater then >26,000

Like Expedited Straight Trucks with the big sleepers you can drive those with a Class B CDL because they do not have a trailer. However get a CDL A and then if you want to drive B trucks that's fine. The only time I got to drive B trucks was when I got my passenger bus endorsement.
