I noticed a few jobs on Craigslist in my area for driving a cargo van interstate and many of them say you need to be familiar with logbooks and have a DOT medical card. I am confused as I thought cargo vans are exempt from them?:dontknow: Can anyone shed some light on this?

Anything over a 10k GVWR being operated interstate for commercial purposes requires a medical card. Not sure about the vans, but I know most current production one ton pickups have a 11k - 13k GVWR. As for the logbook requirements, perhaps so. Not too familiar with it in regards to a cargo van, but I've never read anywhere that it's only applicable when over 26k, either.

Yep 10K on the medical card, over 26K on the logbook and even that can be exempted if they short haul within 100 mile circle.

If they haul any reportable hazmat then they fall under the regulations.

I'd say there are some confused companies out there that overkill.

The Ford E350 has a GVWR of 9,500 lbs so it looks like exempt from both.

you need a medical card if you are going interstate plus you need a logbook if you are travel pass 150 miles radius from your base.

Above 10k on the log book too. You don't need a CDL but hauling interstate with something over 10k gvw gets to use a log book. Did this between 2005 and 2007 in a van.

A bunch of companies require a DOT physical because of their insurance.

I drove a van about two years ago and didnt need a logbook. Needed med card and the company preferred cdl holders as they got a discount on their insurance.

Interesting, anything out here 9900lbs or over must scale and anything 26k and over must have valid yearly DOT inspections, log books exempt only if running inside 100 miles of the registered address.
Some of our customers require yearly DOT inspections on our trucks regardless of GVW. (any trucks that enter their property, except personal pickups etc)
