Hey guys newbie here but I have been hauling for my own business for 15 years. I was just wondering if I can get on any board and find a load say a ltl load or even some full loads that I can haul or are these just for 18 wheelers ? If I can would I need to tell the broker I have a 1ton truck and 40ft flatbed or does this make a difference in the rate that is posted ? I don't want to book one then show up and someone be upset its not a big truck .

    Thanks
    Jonathan

When loads are posted, they are posted with all relevant info including dimensions, weight, what city its in & what city its going to. That's how you know you can call about it or that you can haul it. Once you see the info on the load, you call the company that posted it & they will tell you what it pays. If you want it, they will send you the info along with the rate... which is called a rate sheet. Once you sign that rate sheet, you just signed the contract to accept the load. So, make sure you know all info before you sign. Send it back to the company, they sign it, send you the address & name of the company where its at & the name & address of the destination. They sign it & send you a copy. You take that to the destination & tell them you're there to pick that up. They load you, you take it to the destination. Take that paper work from the shipper & give it to the receiver. They unload you & sign your paperwork. They give you two copies. One for you & one for the shipper or broker. Send that to the shipper or broker & they send you a check.

To re-iterate, on the load boards you will see specific dimensions & weight. Other info will be only basic info. You call & discuss it & then you decide if you want the load. If you're only good for 12,000 lb, dont call about anything over 12,000 lb. It isnt just for 18 wheeler's. If you can haul it, they dont care if you put it in a bicycle basket as long as you have all your DOT numbers etc & 750,000 worth of liability insurance, etc, etc....

Okay thanks I really appreciate it.. Yeah I completely understand what you mean about checking dimensions and weight I'm not gonna call about something that weighs 20,000# when i can haul 12 ...

You could haul insulation and actually make money with a hot shot set up.

Sometimes if there is something like dock-height required they might say NO HOTSHOTS, just like Grumpy said talk to them, you may want someone to do paperwork (at home, or at the office) if you are on the road (as some broker/carrier agreements can be as large as 15 pages, if you are at truckstop at $2 a page )

I hear you on that $2 a page would ad up after a few loads ... My wife will be booking the loads from home and I'm going to have a scanner in the truck that way we can email and efax documents to and from.... What are you guys using for load boards when hauling hot shot or ltl ?

My wife books loads from the house, if she is not available will send to a guy who I pay, I will ask broker to E-mail to IPAD that way I have rate sheet with p/u location with me.
