the tag you have dictates how much ,i have a x2 tag good up to 26000lbs, so add my truck,my trailer and keep under a payload of 13000lbs im ok, been thru several scales since i started this thread no problem till i slipt up and pushed my luck loading a 17000 lb truck, 4000 over, no good, nobody has opend a door to see no numbers yet, just the tag.

Can you buy a weighted tag for an amount greater than your truck is rated for ? My registration list a GCVWR of 20.000lb, how do you go about registering for a higher amount.

    Thanks,

    FarmerTransportation,
I was reading some other threads, it sounds like you have got things figured out as far as when you work. I'm trying to find the least expensive way to make some extra cash, I don't want to be hammering full time to cover all the expenses. May have to stay retired and just pull my 40ft 14.000+lb 5th wheel camper around.

Back in 2008 I was Crew Chief for a race team at South Boston speedway running the NASCAR WHEELEN SERIES. I also pulled the race trailer, on one trip I was motioned over by a DOT crew working Hwy58 in Virginia. He gave me the full experience of his authority, the trailer was a 38ft x 102" with 3 - 7.000lb axles. Just looking at the axles he stated that I was overloaded, he knew my F350 was rated for 20.000lb GCVW, next he asked for my CDL A, again I didn't have one, he found we had one light out (license plate) in which we fixed then. He said I needed a DOT # because racing was considered a business and there was an opportunity to make money (start with large fortune to make small one). He said I needed an MC # because I was out of state (I'm NC). Of course he wrote everything up and presented me with my copy, he told me that he had the authority to make me park it right there until everything was taken care of. He then told me that he was going to turn his back and if I wanted to I could get in my truck and proceed to the next exit and that he didn't want to see me again until I was legal. I ran that road every week end. Well I took my warning and left, I did some research and found the NASCAR teams were exempt from DOT & MC

I was pulled into the AZ scale coming West on I-10 from NM. I am registered for 26K Commercial not IRP, no IFTA. He looked at my AZ Registration for 26K and had me open my door. and shone a flashlight at the sticker. Told me I was 300 pounds over weight because I scaled at 26,300 Pounds.
I use Weight of the truck with me and my stuff in it full of fuel plus the empty trailer. Subtract that from 26,000 and that is how much I can carry. Can never go over 26,000. He did not write me a ticket.

    CMFofNC Thanks this.

Tanhands thanks, looking at what's going down the road I knew there had to be a way to legally pull the big HotShot loads that I see. I will be talking to the DMV.

    wedge542,
I'm getting all of my research and information gathering done now, things don't look promising unless a person wants to go every minute the law allows to make a profit. To make things worse it looks like the insurance cost is going to have big increase, if so I'm out unless hotshot or class 3 carriers are exempted.
I have the equipment paid for but I'm not going to work just to pay the fees and expenses. Iv got to get more out of it than enjoying the scenery and fresh air. I worked for 31 yrs. for a major manufacturer before retiring then working 6 more for another in the same field so I have an income and insurance paid for life.
My job allowed my 6 weeks vacation plus holiday's so I was able to participate in NASCAR and ARCA racing as a paying hobby, got to go places and see things I wouldn't otherwise.
So now here I am trying to find a was to use my equipment to make some extra cash.
If anyone has any ideas I am open for suggestions.
