Fuel price has gone down, rates are the same You don't know the difference between rate and fuel surcharge. I'm still running miles as always loaded both ways no drop in miles. I run all year round winter don't mean crap to me. The next time you want to put words out on what I do and don't do ask me first I will be happy to meet you in person I'm in Middlebury right now!

Are you able to run backhauls while you are leased to a RV transport company or are you on your own authority? I drove a tractor trailer years ago. Been in an office since. Job goes overseas in a few months. I own a class C and have had a travel trailer for years. I would like to do RV transport on a regular basis, but insurance for this in NY cost 5,500 per year and I cannot make the numbers work without backhauls. In fact, with a used truck, insurance... I figure one way transport is a break even and I end up with a truck with high miles real fast. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

It's a shame there are still owner operators that do not know how the fuel surcharge works.it goes down when fuel is less and back up when fuel increases. Your rate is not effected by how much fuel costs is.

And people wonder why so many guys go out of business in the first year...

2002 Ford F350 7.3l diesel. 15mpg hiway naked, 13 with trailer naked, usually around 10 with trailer loaded unless there's a strong headwind (chuckle). One set of new tires per year (about 40,000 miles). One set of brakes and rotors per year. 8 oil changes. I budget $2500 for misc repairs (alternator, starter, you know. the usual crap.) $50 per month for truck washes. $300 per year for registration.
So:
40,000 miles:
Fuel @ .375/mi
Tires @ .30
Brakes, oil, washes, registration @ $ .05
Insurance @ $.12 (I could probably shop that and get it down some. $1million liability, $100k cargo
Other repairs @ $ .0625
Total: $ .9075/mi.
You can see that a new or expensive truck could run you broke. I'm setting aside money for major repairs such as an engine ($4,000 for a Ford reman 7.3), a transmission ($2500 for a reman) and I will need a new bed ($2000) and some rust repairs on the cab ($2000). If I can find another '02 in good shape, I may just replace it. New is out of the question.SteadyEddie Thanks this. -

That's right. 8-P I should know by now that when the numbers exceed 21 I have to get out the calculator.

Where's your driver wages, taxes, and profit in those numbers? There was an o/o who used to post here that averaged $1.65 all miles one year with a similar setup as you.
