Just got an email from the front office that the Eclipse Logbook software will now be an option to use. You can go back to paper log books or use another computer based log program. Several drivers are looking at an android or iOS based product. I found one called “KeepTruckin” for the iPad and Android tablets.

I also suspect tis is all in a move to get us ready for in-cab recorders soon, but who knows.

    Anyone using it? Any feedback?

I've been using KeepTruckin' app for a while now, 6 months + Works really well, and can fax your logs to your company fax machine at no cost. They keep updating it and the latest update allowed you to not have to sign your name every single log but saves it and you just click your name on the log everyday and saves it. I have had no problems using it on my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone.

If you use a logbook that is not a EBOR you have to print it out everyday sign it and keep a copy in the truck for 7 days. using a smartphone or a notebook computer to run software driven logbooks maybe just adding to your fustration overall.

The decision as to accept logging software in place of a paper book is the decision of the officer at the time, some may allow you to print and sign while they wait and not site you, but other will site you anyway, they can put you out of service if there in a bad mood. This is just opening lots of doors that could remain closed.

This is not my opinion. this is right out of the Keller / FMCSA book on HOS ELOGS.

As long as an officer can view your elog for the past 7 days plus the day your on there's no need to print it out every day.. an officer may give you a fax number to fax your logs too.. instructions on how to use your elog program must be in possession .. if your elog program goes down for some reason you wihll need paper copies in possession until its running again

Not true, EBOR yes, software logbook no. There are requirements and programs like DDL are elgal logs, but technically have to be printed and signed. Past that if an officer choose to accept it then your great. But you need to be aware they can site you for form and function.

Yep, what the scalemaster told me, they can request a copy even to a DOTs fax in the back of his SUV/Patrol cars machine but I do keep my loose leaf log in briefcase with my laptop computer

I'll use paper logs as long as it is an option. § 395.8(f)(2) requires the RODS to be "in the driver's own handwriting" which is not the case with e-logs.

    § 395.15 authorizes e-logs...

Funny thing is, though, authority to use e-logs is a privilege which may be revoked!

I think I'll be keeping § 395.15(j) in mind when the carrier tells us they are proceeding forward with plans to force O/O's onto e-logs like they did with their company drivers.

I downloaded it onto m iPad today. It looks pretty cool. It also shows up on the iPhone as well, (It’s a cloud thing I’m sure). I will be “testing it” for the next two weeks. As long as I don’t sign my logs— i’m cool. I will be using the paper logs until I make sure this will work - stand by.

The good thing is that it’s one less thing I have to carry around. The laptop was only being used for the Eclipses Logbook software. Everything else is done on the iPhone and iPad. I do carry a printer for the iPad. If I can find a way to get rid of that I would be golden.
