Well - here is just 4 of the ones I could get a response from today. The question is if they will let me do my own backhauls under their numbers:

    Horizon - No
    CWRV - No
Classic Transport- Truck,(drive-away) No - Flatbed and car racks - maybe, but we would like you to be with the company at least 2 years.
Star Fleet- Maybe, but then again they would like yo to be with them at least a year and show a commitment to them.

I did not ask how much they would require dollar wise to be able to do this. They all gave me the impression that why would I want to do that when we have so much work right now. Keep in mind they were all recruiters trying to get as many new drivers as they can. I did hear a little panic in their responses when I asked about back hauling on my own.

I also suspect, based on some of the responses, that there is a big “underground” back haul community out there. Some of the responses were of the nature of why would we even consider doing that. Conversation over, move on.

If you use a companies numbers they will want to be paid a percentage for it. If they have loads both ways you should let them load you. After they take a chunk there may not be enough left over to make it worth it.
The reason they say no is if you get into a wreck it will go on their insurance. If you get pulled over and given a violation it will go on their DOT numbers. There really isn't an upside for them to do it.

You know once you get on board with these companies, things change.

ALSO back hauls don't really exist, freight to haul does. There is no underground community for back hauls, but there is a real community for freight.

If you are hauling RV where would you put the back haul anyways?

I think we can put this to rest.
Very little, if any, RV backhauls.
Some people who work for a transport company can do self-generated back hauls and a little point to point cargo trailer freight, ( it’s the exception, not the norm).
Transport companies really don’t want to get involved unless they see it as profitable for them and the driver as well.
It’s going to be another heck of a season in R.V. outbound transport.

hate to break the news to ya' but ...

I was going to do this a few years back (still may) and the two companies I talked to (went to their office to talk to them directly) had owners who I know personally from other ventures and those owners have gotten freight to haul back to towards their respective yards by the companies. It isn't about profit for them but to insure that the owners can keep their costs down.

Some times it is to haul boats back near the yard, some times it is other rvs that are going back to the manufacturer or a custom outfitter, sometimes it is construction equipment.

Like I said once you sign on with a company, things changes ... Looking in from the outside sometimes means nothing.

oh and I learned something a long time ago, never call and try to talk to these people, be it a truck you want to sign on, an rv hauling company or anything because they will get 29 calls in a day and not care but show up and ask questions.
