you won't get air brakes and if the combined GVWR is not 33,001 or more it won't qualify

Yes and no. You are half right, they will not get air brake restriction removed with a one ton and trailer, but they will qualify for a class A if the gross combined weight rating of the truck and trailer is greater than 26,001 pounds and the trailer alone has a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more. 33,001 does not play into a license class anywhere, even for a class B the weight is 26,001 or more. Trust me I know this inside and out, I am a former Pennsylvania CDL examiner and have given many cdl a exams on pickups with trailers.

For the OP, the walk around is the same as any other truck, you just will have a few less items to check, they may ask you to do a hydraulic brake leakdown test which is basically holding your foot on the brake and feeling for loss of pressure. They also will have you pull your breakaway pin and pull against the trailer to test the trailer emergency brakes, other than that it will be all the same as any other class a exam.

They will tell you if they want the hood opened or not. Some states have stopped doing this for liability reasons and just ask you to describe what and how you would inspect under the hood, your examiner will tell you what they expect.

Been a year or so since I took anyone down to the DMV for their CDL driving test, but here in California they expect you to mention all the components that are on semi trucks. Just like the book shows it. It's stupid. Hopefully Illinoise won't expect you to do that but just incase be ready for it.

    Good Luck on your test.
